Gearbox Rebuild Kit

Postby TheDiko on Wed, 09 Jul 2014 5:29 +0000

I have a few questions for you guys.

First, I'd like to have a go at rebuilding a gearbox for my LN106. Assuming I follow the Toyota rebuild guide I have so you think this is within my capabilities assuming I have all the tools.

Also would an aftermarket kit be suitable for the long term life of the gearbox like the one in the link below from ec4wd on eBay

Hilux Gearbox Major overhaul kit Live Axle

The reason why I want to rebuild one is because it is difficult to downshift to 2nd and put in reverse without a bit of throttle and it slightly grinds into 4th on the downshift.

Looks fine, except for all the parts that are missing.

You will probably need synco's. Possibly a few new gears or maybe selector rings (have to inspect when apart).

Might pay to look into a s/h
Box with lower kms
They start to get pricy when changing the syncro

Don't go secondhand. Your car is too old IMHO to find a reliable replacement. As Andy said, pu it apart and check it out first. You'll be very lucky if you only need bearings and seals. What's actually wrong with it? But if you're confident, do it. It's just at that age, gearboxes are repaired on a case by case basis rather than just bearings through all of them.

Just because it's an ln106
That doesn't mean only 25year old gearboxes fit
You can get a box from a 2l, 3l and 5l

If you have big wheels look for a r151f if not the r150 will do fine
Only 1st gear is different

I know John, anything is possible. Not knocking anyones shit. The newest 5L powered Hilux is now nearly 10 years oldso you are taking your chances a bit. It's just my opinion but I think a well built recon gearbox will be better than just about any s/hand job.

Yes you are correct,
My concern is "well built"
Without internal and external slid hammer
A good torque wrench, deep (spark plug) sockets
And other assorted hand tools, and a good manual
If your replacing all the synchro that's all you need,
If not a micrometer or digital vernier to measure
