jolt/shunt kun26r auto when braking

Postby ricky1 on Tue, 11 Mar 2014 6:00 +0000

Hi everyone, a newbie to the site, just bought 2009 4x4 d/c and what l have noticed is that when coming to a complete stop ther is a jolt/shunt right on stopping, l tried greasing the tail shaft but has not seemed to help.
Sometimes the jolt/shunt is present when releasing your foot off the brake to take off, is this a major??

I have read a few threads and posts on other sites about this.
It appears that it is a common occurrence. My 2013 4X4 dual cab does the same thing and has less than 10k on the clock.
The thud seems to come from the drive train. My suspicion is slack in the transfer case.
From what I've read, it doesn't seem to cause any failures, just annoyance.

I have the same issue with my 2010 my11 started after 5000klms of owning her, mentioned it to my dealer and they told me they know of the issue and it's exactly the same in the prado. Explanation I got, was that when they started to do minor upgrades along with this generations life they changed the tail shaft.
They were quite helpful and took care of it for me, after each service it would start to reappear after 2000 or so klms. they would grease it or pull it out and service it (which they did) with no hassles.
Unfortunately it's just something that we have to deal with. But don't be too worried it's just a little bit of a pain sometimes

Exactly as has been said. Just reguarily grease ALL of the uni-joints and the slip joint along the tailshaft with good quality grease.

mine has done that from new, mentioned it to the dealers in servicing but they say that the manager personally road tests all services and would pick it up if there is something wrong, but it feels like something electronic happening in the transmission like a last minute shift back to first or something, something I can live with, but good to know it seems to be normal.

i get this all the time if i come to a hard stop , especially down hill. I think it just winds up a bit.

I think its pretty normal mate, my rig is in A+ condition mechanically.

Worth checking those threads out, make sure you've given all those driveline nipples lots of love!

May be worth checking your pinion angles too, both ends of the driveshaft should be the same, very common on lifted trucks and an oversight when fitting a lift kit..

The jolt I speak of is very minor and occasional.

Just had the 10k service done and mentioned the thud from the drive shaft to service manager.
He said he had heard of it happening on Prados but not the Hilux.
They checked it out and found that the slip joint in the tailshaft was "under lubricated and had an excessive air lock".
Time will tell if this has fixed the annoying thud.
At least it is on record if something fails.

Hey Simmo61 so did you have the thud, and now it is gone because of the "air lock" and some more grease put in??? how did they fix the air lock problem? thanks, l'm baffled

I have had the thud from about 2000 ks.
At the moment what ever they did seems to have worked. Don't know how long it will last but its good now.
Maybe you should talk to your local Toyota dealer, as it seems to be a common problem with both Prado and Hilux.
