Transfer Case Whine

Postby fgk228 on Thu, 31 Oct 2013 6:45 +0000

G'day,

So after I got dragged out of bog hole backwards developed a whine and a leak from the transfer case.

The mechanic fixed the leak by tightening the bolts up on the back of TC however there is still a whine in the TC.

The whine is vehicle speed dependent and does not change on/off throttle.

I locked one hub on the front a drove around and there was no noise. Swapped hub and still the same. Its only when the TC is spinning. It starts to whine above 40kph and it doesn't matter if it is in hi/low 4WD or 2WD with hubs locked.

I leaning towards a bearing is stuffed in the transfer case. I have lubed all the CV joints with no effect.

Really hard to tell mate over the net but you're probably on the money. It's either that or the front diff isn't it. Maybe take the front propshaft out and run it with the hubs in. That'll spin the diff without turning the transfer. The fact it's not load dependent tends to suggest the diff is ok. Report back.

Thanks Mate. I'll change the fluid in the TC and see what that does.

As Matt said, just take the front drive shaft out, lock the hubs in and drive in 2H. This will give you a definite answer of if it's the transfer case or front diff.
Changing the oil won't fix anything, it will just cost you money. Diagnose the problem first.

Agree. Might see something on the magnet but wouldn't guarantee it's ok even if you don't.

There is not a lot in there to whine.

I have changed a few chains due to stretch and tight spots.

So changed he TC oil. It need to be changed but nothing bad.

Noise was still there so I changed the front diff oil. Heap of water, oil was dirty as and a bunch of metal was on the magnet. Changed it twice and very little metal left.

The noise is still there. Its not as bad but still very there.

I leaning towards the ring and pinion gear are making the noise.

So bit of an update.

Took it to an transmission shop and he has been working on it for the last few days and this is beasically what he has found.

Front diff full of water - three bearing completely stuff and one of the short end drive shaft bearing.

front wheel bearings - full of water

rear bearings stuffed

rear shoes worn in 10,000km

front cv boot ripped and cv stuffed.

Luckly the air locker and gears were fine.
