1995 LN108 2L-TE Diesel AT Stock Differential Questions

Postby spiritus on Sat, 27 Jul 2013 10:21 +0000

Please excuse me if I missed it in my search, just got this truck out on the road for the first time today. When I put it in 4WD the front diff chirps the wheels hard like it is locked when turning. Unfortunately I do not have the tools lift it up and check that way the old fashioned way.

Does any one know if this vehicle has a factory locker up front, if so what type and how is it controlled? Noticed a few wires and a solenoid going to the front diff, wondering what they do?

Thanks in advance if anyone has any information for me, if it sounds like I am new to 4x4, I am. Have experience with sports cars so hoping to be a quick study and a contributor before too long.

Mate im not aware of a factory locker option on that hilux and if they are have never heard of it. I would be betting on that they have just wielded up the front diff.

Thank you FGK228. After making a noob discovery of the miracle that is ADD Auto Disconnect Differential and reading up on it, determined that my front diff is indeed modified to be locked (Not sure if welded, or Detroit style have to open it up...), and this is causing the front right wheel to always be engaged. My fuel economy is not terrible but it was not what I expected, on the flip side though this truck was handling OUTSTANDING in the rain. Now it makes more sense.

Based on how I have this understood. Planning to install a manual hub on the right side to disengage it when it is not raining for fuel economy during daily driving. Anyone have any other affordable tips or advise for what to do with this setup?
