Gearbox oil change?

Postby packeteer on Fri, 03 Aug 2012 3:37 +0000

Guys, I just need a little help doing my gearbox oil change
I've read the manual, bought the gear and taken a look at the subject.
BUT, before I get physical with it, can somebody confirm I'm on the right track...

in this pic, is that the drain hole?

yep, thats it. That will only drain the gearbox though, if you want to do the transfer case as well there is a seperate drain and fill plug for it.

Do you have a new aluminium sealing washer to put on the plug after you remove it? also be careful when doing the plug up. Don't think that the tighter the better, because the alloy gearbox housing crack VERY easily. just use a ratchet to do it up not a breaker bar.

thanks Andy

yeah, I found the transfer case drain plug. It looks similar and is on the rear of the casing.

As for the sealing washer, I had debated between gasket compound (non hardening) and fibre washers...

the manual seems to indicate the use of sealing (gasket) compound.

So, what should I use?

They have an alloy washer on them, thats what to use. If you don't have a new washer then re-use the old one and put some thread sealant on the plug. The best stuff for the job is loctite 567, should be able to get some from supercheap or autobahn.
Dont bother with fibre washers.
