Rear Diff Specs

Postby jos89h on Sun, 08 Jul 2012 6:20 +0000

Guys, I've got a BT-50 and am interested in putting a hilux rear diff (complete) in for locker purposes. Don't want to put an air locker in as wont suit my needs, am planning on getting a detroit locker or similar.

If anyone could take 5 minutes of their time and measure the distance between the leaf seat centres, the shock absorber mounts from centre and what side of the axle each mount is located.

Could anyone with a pre 2005 hilux let me know the dimensions of their rear diff? The later model - 2005 and newer - is a bit off from what I'm after

Mate can i ask what's wrong with your OEM diff?
might be simpler to get a diff specialist to do a job on your diff ?
beef up the clutch plate etc ?
just a thought

Ken, my diff is open, it doesn't have an LSD, changing the offset on my leafs and slightly moving the shocks isn't really a big task,it's easier than trying to get a custom diff carrier to go in my diff. The hilux diff is the only one i've found so far with the same gear ratio aswell - 3.727:1

in modern vehicles with stability control, they usually use an open diff ie. no LSD

How wont a Air Locker suit your needs? Locks when you want it to and unlocks when you want it unlocked...

Has to be way easier to put a locker in your current diff than the massive task of swapping diffs..

Then you'll have to get the Hilux one engineered...

Just curious as to why your going to all this trouble just for a Detroit locker which require a "re-adjustment" to your driving style and create extra wear on your rear's

An air locker isn't going to help in day to day driving. My main want for the true trac is the LSD actions it provides. You see in wet weather etc at the moment, i can't accelerate without wheel spin until i get to fourth gear basically so i have to crawl along to get going. The Detroit Truetrac doesn't lock 100% (50% to each wheel) like the other Detriot lockers, it provides 100% traction although it distributes it according to which wheel needs the traction (40/60 70/30) etc, much like an LSD just stronger.

Hi NHN, been a while. Be gentle!

Just trying to help out a young fella who has a 1998 single cab Hilux 5LLN67r (3L Diesel)

Rear diff has decided to start dying. Noisey. Advice is that we may as well replace the whole centre rather than trying to rebuild it. Quite expensive to rebuild, so taking the risk on a second hand centre is the go.

Just wondering if any of you guys know its specs and what other wrecks I could scab this part from outside finding the exact model somewhere. Oh and your best sources. (I am in Sydney)

Young fella is a apprentice heavy diesel mechanic, so a learning experience for him, and we also have a more expert friend to help do the swap. ;)

Any advice will be greatly appreciated! :D :geek:

Is it a 4wd BG. If ratio doesn't matter I think a hiace diff is the same as a lux.

Yep a 4wd mate. So ratio will matter. Heaps of 4runners around same vintage, heaps of hiaces... but they all huge k's..

Just wondering what I can pilfer from to start my search. ;)

Think that model runs a 4.1:1 diff. I could be wrong but I think the 4 cylinder Prados run the same ratio.
