rear axles LN106

Postby dustyboots on Tue, 03 Jul 2012 2:53 +0000

Hi,

Regarding rear axles on an LN106... Is there a more likely place they will break with excessive torque upon them? (inner or outer end)

Does the wheel fall of when they go at speed? talking up around 200km/hr

Just trying to figure out if I might need to go a different /safer route with the rear diff or not with my dual cab.

Thanks.

Good luck getting a LN106 Hilux up to 200Km/hr. I would think that alot more other things would have fallen off by then

I am considering adding some nitrous and am concerned if the axle's weak point is on the outer end of the shaft... I could lose the lot and end up on the lid. If they break in toward the diff centre I might have a chance to hold it.

Never seen one break so not sure which end normaly goes.

Yes, only down the 1/8 mile

starting to get a bit too quick for the 1/4. just not sure on the axles.

Is there any guys here with experience at broken axles in a LN106? I'd be interested to see where they break.

Yeah, would be a bit safer to bust one on the dyno.

I don't particularly want to be the first guy to find out if the wheels falls off at 200... lol.

Been off the road since February when I cooked a new trans. I've Just finished building that stronger, should be back in action next weekend. Really only have the tail shaft and axles left that are stock.

Started off as wanting a bit more power than the 2.8 diesel.... snowballed from that.

Didn't do a built thread. but there's a you tube vid at the last 1/8mile where it was slipping 3rd.

I don't have any experience with them breaking offroad, but i do know of guys who run hilux diffs in rotaries etc and they usually twist the splines off first then axle studs . I've seen the splines twist 60 degrees before they let go which makes them a real arse to get out of the centre!

rear axles LN106

I have broken an axle on my LN106 and it was on the outside where the wheel bearing is held on with a circlip, it sheared off through the circlip groove. I drove about 500 klm without the wheel falling off, but it did get a bit wobbles. I also had a rear disc brake conversion so it was near impossible for the wheel to fall off.

But a mate had one snap off in the same spot while he was doing about 100 klm an hour, and a 35" wheel and tyre took, off a couple of hundred meters into a paddock. It took him a long time to stop as the wheel took the rear brake with it so he ended up with no brakes. He was lucky not to tip it over.

:o

That's the kind of info I was after... thanks men.

I might have to start thinking about some sort of diff conversion for this old girl. The cruiser setup
seems a lot safer the way the axle floats. I don't fancy losing a wheel at the top end of the dragstrip, your mate was very lucky to hold on to it for sure.

Did you do your own caliper mounts or has someone got a kit on the market? I was looking at the snake racing site ages ago and said it wasn't ready yet.

I made my own mounts and used the same calipers as the front.
