Vehicle Stability Control

Postby jcadd on Sun, 23 Oct 2011 12:51 +0000

Hi all,
I've got a 2011 Hilux SR5 with what I think is a problem with the Vehicle Stability Control. I've returned the vehicle to Toyota and they tell me that there is nothing wrong with it.

I have had the VSC come on numerous times around left and right corners when I'm doing 20 km's under the advised speed pulling me out of the corner towards the opposite side of the road, the roads have been dry and are sealed.
Anyone else come across this with their Hilux?

Same roads same speed, my Wifes Honda Accord and my sons VE Commodore Ute has no problem with the corners even at higher speeds than advised

Thanks for any feed back
Dave

hey mate.. yeah mine does the same thing.. if your too hot in a corner it will lock a front wheel (l/h corner l/h front wheel, r/H corner R/h front wheel) and cut out any acceleration.... if im driving through the blue mountianes i turn it off just in case.. it will do it on bad corrugated dirt roads too..

This is why I wish the Hilux had the same ESC program as the Proche where it speeds up the opposite wheel instead of slowing it down. It's much safer and better to drive with. I have noticed the VSC in the Hilux seems to be touchy on some vehicles so there may not be anything wrong with it. It all depends on what Toyota classes as "in spec".

I have the same problem with my Hilux SR5 which is a 2011 D4D. it randomly puts on the front right or left brake and it has caused me to end up on the wrong side of the road a couple of times. VERY DANGEROUS. The vehicle has been modified by the addition of a steel tray and air bags to level it up. It has also had gas shocks put in the front & heavy duty springs. The Toyota dealer in Traralgon is ducking & weaving making every excuse they can think of to avoid dealing with the problem....this is unacceptable, they offer the same options pre purchase so whats the issue?? I was originally told they could de sensitise the VSC but now they have changed their mind. They are hiding behind the comment "You have modified the vehicle from standard so its not our problem".....what a load of crap who doesnt modify their Hilux in same way....no many I suspect as they are pretty much useless as they come standard as a work horse. This vehicle cost me almost $60000.00 plus the $10000.00 plus to make it useable I expect more from a company like Toyota especially as they are bragging about Hilux popularity at the moment. I will keep you posted as this saga develops.

PS Brendan why are u offering suspensions mods while this is happening??? Have you discovered a way to over ride the VSC without having to remember to hold in the VSC button for 6 seconds every time u turn the key?

Any more news on this?

I've had what I think is the same issue, seems to only be from the front right and generally happens in a left hand corner, where the weight is on the right wheel. It makes a burring noise similar to ABS and cuts power for a sec then is ok again. Seems random though, has only happened about 4 times in the last few weeks and I haven't been able to replicate the problem so far.

May be completely irrelevant but it's only happened to me since I did the 2" lift a few weeks ago, any correlation?

I have a 2011 SR5 with 2" lift and give it a hiding through some corners (nothing dangerous) and it has always behaved itself very well, well for a 4x4 anyway's. It has never carried on like what is happening to you chaps.

Hey all I am trying to get a data base of Hilux Owners who are having the same safety issues. Please email me your name, Hilux year of manufacture and a contact number my email is adobe@speedweb.com.au .

Maybe if we get some numbers together Toyota might take us seriously

I had a Ve commodore that did the same thing. Totally stock and would do it at 20 km/h on a round about. It dragged me off the road a couple of times. Holden had it for two weeks and couldn't sort it after I had demonstrated it to them. I took it to my local guy and he sorted it in 5 mins. It was a very bad wheel alignment triggering the stability control. It had 15mm toe out rather than toe in. Once that was fixed the problem went away.

Just an update on my problem, my vehicle has progressively got to a point where the initial VSC problem has almost gone.
Toyota tells me that the computer has a learning programe built in.
They also tell me Toyota is aware of this problem and is going to issue a software upgrade.

How great , a safety system that damn near kills you ?

What next , air bags deployed on speed bumps?

for me, it is not really an issue. I can count on one hand the number of times it has happened on bitumen. and that is the only place I care about it. the times it has fired can be blamed on aggressive driving

on the dirt, it is useless / dangerous just the same as ABS, which unfortunately has no disable switch (unless u install one)

Can you just pull the fuse out for ABS and put it back in when finished?
