hey guys i got a 2000 TD hilux single cab 4wd... ive blown my rear diff but i have on hand a 05 model diff from the exact same type of car (single cab TD 4wd) but its just the newer model instead... they should be the same fitment or at least the same ratio??? if it doesnt fit up i should be able to pull the guts out and swap over yeh???

Any help would do... I still cant get the ratio of my diff because i dont know how to find it... and im just going to get the mechanics to swap it.. i just dont want them ringing me up saying its the wrong diff and then i will have to pay them to rebuild it and cause i dont have $1k+....

any suggestions? Its the KZN 165R model with the Prado turbo diesel in it!

i think there wider the new diffs get the measuring tape out, diff ratio will be different for sure, you may be able to use the diff centre but i think the bearing ID also changed from 50 to 53mm , if i am wrong i am sure some one else will soon correct me.

KZN165R TD M/T has a 3.727:1 diff ratio.

The 2000 model and 2005 model (still previous shape/gen hilux) both had the same diff ratio and rear differential so it will be a straight swap.

The 2005 your reffering to would have been one of the last ones since they changeed to the current gen hilux through 2005.

The 3.727 rear diff ratio is the same one found on some current model hilux's thou the current model hilux's rear housing is different the centers should be interchangeable.

sorry i mis read, i thought the 2005 was a new shape you where refering too

sorry mmaxxx... i was refering to the new model hilux (2005)... the one with the D4D... it may be an 06 model??? but you know the type im talking about... can i interchange the centers?

the centers should be with everything that I have read/know about them exactly the same. The rear centers only.

I had a bloke ask the same thing about the very same vehicle on 4WD Action forum few months ago......so Im 99% sure they are the same.

mmaaxx... just got back in from swaping the diffs.. the centre interchanged nicely as planned... but i ran into 2 problems:

I put the axles back in and they were out by about 5mm. When i tried to tighten them it got all real tight and locked up so i didnt keep going.. took them off again and tried to put em back in again and the same thing... they dont quite get in their flush... maybe the diff axle centre has different offset?

and the other problem was the tail shaft connecting piece didnt fit up to the newer diff bolt pattern... im guessing i can just swap that with the one from the old diff? i didnt get to give it a go cause it got dark.

im taking the other diff in the meantime tomorrow to the diff centre because i think all that was wrong with it was the bearings... (it just had a bit of play on the input side)... so if this all goes pearshape im gonna stick the old one back in...

if anyone can shed some light on this it would be awesome!!! im not mechanically minded so im not sure as to what the best plan of attack is from here...

How'd your diff issues fix go?

are you using the housing out of the 06 lux??? just put the new carries in the old housing and everything will work...all 4wd IFS rear diffs are 8 inch 31 spline and all front diffs in hilux IFS are 7.5 inch 27 spline, they also use the 7.5inch diff in the rear of the 2wd models...just double check the ratio is the same and swap out whatever parts you need...but as you found out pinion flanges might vary

keep in mind housing will vary...which means pinion offset changes as well obviously
