1983 Hilux Headlight Issues

1983 Hilux Headlight Issues

Postby furstydrft on Mon, 19 Jul 2010 8:46 +0000

In a few days I will be taking ownership of a 1983 Hilux. I was show and told about an issue with the headlights. If I switched from the main headlights to high beam I lost all but my dash lights and parkers, if I was to keep flicking the headlights between high and low beam i would eventually pick up high beams.

The main reason I want it fixed is because I regularly travel along back roads which depend on high beams every now and again, and I surely don't want to be fighting with my headlights while traveling at high speeds.

would anybody be able to assist me on what to look for to fix this issue?

Welcome on board.

I'll be moving your post to the 5th generation technical electrical section.
Cheers

if the high beams do occasionally work then it aint the globes. could be the high beam relay or more likely sounds like the headlight combination switch is faulty

G'day i once had a Daihatsu that had light issues, found to have a broken engine to chassis earth strap. I also added another from engine to firewall, no trouble from then on. Very cheap to check yourself before heading to the auto sparkies.

Hi All Im new to this Forum,

My Issue is I have an 83 22R Hilux. I decided to put an aftermarket radio in. I did all the test light tests for the Memory 12V Always, for supply on when key is on and off when key is off, i naturally assumed that the ground was black, speakers tested via external 12V Battery but as I was testing a brown cable sparked and blew the 10A tail fuse. I naturally left the brown cable disconnected in a BP. Now all my lights externally still operate as normal only issue i have is that my dash lightrs have gone,.

Any help would be appreciated

It will be the contacts in the dip switch, if your careful you can get in and clean them but if this has been done before it wont last long. There were some cheap after market combination switches floating around a few years back, might still be able to get them.

The easier way is to mount a change over relay under the bonnet and cut into the headlight harness and use the lo beam contacts to control the relay and have the relay switch lo and hi in.

If your anywhere close id be happy to do it for you.

I was actually referring to the original post in this thread, you I suggest checking the the dimmer isn't damaged if it is the 3 wire type.
