Component Location???

Component Location???

Postby Rob_Wood on Wed, 11 Jan 2023 5:23 +0000

HiYa,
Not the starter motor, not the battery. I can hear the Starter relay (not the solenoid) clicking in but it's not activating the solenoid. Next to the fuse box under the bonnet there's a lid labelled "ST Relay", but there's nothing in the hole. This is next to the Sub GLW Relay. I'm guessing the contacts in this relay are cooked, but I can't find where it is physically located. Any assistance would be very much appreciated.

what year model?

From the diagrams online, it should be in the fuse box that you have identified.
I might be wrong.

2005 SR Hilux 1KD - SOLD
2009 BMW X5 - destroyed by a hail storm
2012 Range Rover Sport SDV6 - SOLD
2015 Ford Ranger

Yeah, thanks, it "should" be there, but I can't see it.

Have a second person turn the key
Why you look for the relay feel the ones that are there for the one that's clicks
Or did someone knock a relay off and playing a game with you

Yeah, been there, it actually sounds like it's up under the dash somewhere. That's why I'm kinda puzzled.
Before you ask, it's not near the under dash fuse panel either. It sounds deaper in, like it's in or behind the instrument cluster somewhere.

Have you tried shorting out the solenoid just to check it is working

Yeah, nah, bench test works fine

Will check that over the weekend, sorta tossing up whether to wire in a separate push Button with an accessible dedicated relay at the moment. Sorta going slow coz' I've been concentrating on the 4YO the last few days.

Slight up date, the wire to the solenoid had been attacked in the loom across the firewall. Anywhere else on the vehicle and I'd says it looks like it was hit by a stick or stone and cut the wire, but the is no sign of a stick or stone ever having been there and I've never seen anything like that across the firewall, so I really dunno what is going on here.
Anyway, it's going again and all is back to a relative normality.
Thanks for the input guys.
Oohhh, I still never found the "Relay" sound that still comes from up under the dash somewhere. Pray it never goes belly up right?

Nah, north coast. I was tracing back the solenoid wire when I found the cut.
I know what you're saying about not knowing, but it's going again and if worst comes to worst, then the loom is now much easier to reopen if I need to try again.
