GPS No signal

GPS No signal

Postby Joukowski on Mon, 29 Feb 2016 11:44 +0000

2016 Hilux SR5, & it seems real hard for this car to acquire a signal.... Anyone else getting this problem? Is there anything I can try or is this a trip to Toyota? Very busy at work so won't have time to take it in, in the next few weeks at least.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

yeah I suspect a trip to the dealership may be unavoidable. thanks. I can see the satellites but available always = 0. gets worst on cloudy days.

The dealer says there's no problems. The GPS antenna is ok and these new ones cannot be repositioned anymore. And it all worked fine at the workshop while we were standing around scratching our head. No choice but to take it home... then lo & behold, i was driving towards Malawi over the Indian Ocean from Fremantle the very next day!

I found out that if you had a phone on charge on the cigarette lighter, it reduces your GPS signal.

I've learnt to start the car, let the GPS find the satellites then push in the cigarette lighter to charge my phone.

charge the phone via usb.. it's slower but may not affect the satellite as much.

Surprisingly using the usb reduces the satellite signals too, it's much easier to partially pull out and push in the cigarette lighter which is why i've gone that way. it's unbelievable, you will see the gps strength drop immediately the charger goes in the cigarette lighter. This only took me like 5 months to find out!

& btw, for Toyota - this is a really really silly design, especially when the new SR5 has 2 cigarette lighters on both sides of the dash for use as chargers. And using anyone of them and/or the usb might cause you to loose GPS. Looking for an address driving down a road is impossible - you can jumped onto an adjacent street anytime.

Is my car special? Am i the only one having this issue?

looking for an address / entering an address is disabled whilst driving, is this maybe the issue? If you come to a standstill the address "house" icon should become available again.

alternatively just use the phone's power plug and plug it in the center armrest console.

At the end of the day it shouldn't be happening...

I would contact Toyota Aus and register a complaint/feedback... may be one of those bugs when they release a new gen.

I'm guessing the power feed for both accessory sockets runs along side the gps antenna coax. What a great design, your options would be to shield the antenna coax or re-route the power feed further away. Not exactly great for a new vehicle.

When you already have an address punched in at the start and is following directions, you might find that you've actually turned into the wrong street instead...

I've done that. The local agent says it's never happened before.... I strongly suspect he's lying.
