LN106 Led Tail Light Resistors

LN106 Led Tail Light Resistors

Postby TheDiko on Sat, 26 Apr 2014 4:49 +0000

Hey guys,

Finally got around to attempting to fix my indicators today and have run into a bit of trouble. When I asked he auto electrician about how to install the resistors he said you need to wire them from the positive to the indicator to the earth.

I did just that with scotch locks and it slowed down the blinker speed to the normal rate but now the indicators won't come on. The brake, tail and reverse lights still come on fine but the indicators don't light up. I'm hoping someone knows there I've gone wrong.

Also I'm trying to attach a photo but can't seem to find the attachment button

You can get a flashed unit specificically for led indicators on eBay. I'll try and link it if you like.

when I went to the sparky, he said the flasher units for LED's were unreliable, so he would only use the resistors

Diko, your description of wiring does sound correct. Check this link for a nice graphic:

My understanding is resistors are one way, as in the current flows from right to left or left to right, make sure you have the correct side connected for it to do its job. If your LED is blinking quick generally a resistor will fix the job, or try making sure all lights are connected before turning on, as more current could draw to other lights. eg. going to 4 light bulbs instead of the normal 6 so more current?

I'm no auto electrician but just a theory that I've realised over time and it has worked every time.

Thanks for the fast responses!

Packet ever that is exactly how I've installed it.

Dr.Lux I'll flip them around first thing tomorrow and see if it sorts it out.

Replace the flasher relay with led tolerant one on eBay. $8. 34 second job.

Well I've tried flipping the resistors around to no avail. They blink slower either way but still don't light up at the rear when blinking and all other lights work as normal.

Should've mentioned they are 25w 6 ohm if that makes a difference. It is the same as the Narva brand

Looks like I'll have to change the relay

The resistors are a terrible option, they introduce more points failure, and heat up. The changing the flasher relay to an LED model is the best option, and a cheap option as well.
