jump starting

I was thinking of putting a dc to dc charger in but was wondering what the best way is to start you battery from the auxillary one without causing damage to the charger. Is it cheaper just to carry around a set of jumper leads and disconnect the red arc or ctek to avoid damage. Just dont want to have too much of a mess under the bonnet and for how many times the start battery might go flat. I have seen the red arc wiring diagram but looks expensive.

Yeah, I'd just use a set of jumper leads

Again as simple 120 amp battery isolator from a marine shop to connect and disconnect the 2 positive terminals and it is all as simple as that. Like 60 bucks.

A voltage sensing relay will allow aux to contribute to cranking, share heavy loads between batteries, and charge your aux faster than a dcdc.

Hi. I have a similar set up your talking about. Dc-dc charger as well as a more basic silver round relay with 4 terminals and i have a push button switch in the cab to link them together. I figured it wouldn't hurt the dc-dc charger since it has 12+ volts either side of it anyway and when you link them together it is kinda like normal driving around then. Anyway it hasn't seemed to damage to charger at all and works perfectly every day. I did think of an isolator switch that boxhead55 mentioned but I didn't want to get out of the car to jump it. Lazy i guess. Ah well. Its close to the best mod Ive done.

No the relay is a better idea. You could use a glow plug relay or just a 80 amp relay Hooler up to a dash button. Easy as

For the odd occasion you need to do it just disconnect the supply and feed from the DCDC charger and join them up ( bypass the unit) and crank away

Bloody hell. How heavy is the wiring you have running to and from your dc-dc battery charger?!
I know the ctec ones are only 20amp output and I think the redarcs are 25amp.

I've got my third battery connected through a 175amp Anderson plug that supplies the dc_dc charger in the canopy. I can jump start myself of the battery in the canopy if need be.

So if i have a cheap solenoid and a ctek charger. Do i need to disconnect the ctec when using the solenoid to jump start the main off the auxullary. Will it damage those ctek chargers.
