Any reason why they do it boxhead or others.
Failing battery, alternator getting weak, dirty fuse contacts [heat], old fuse or they just do it.

Yea many things can cause it normally higher loads due to a flat battery or stuff like you mentioned.

I had a similar problem ,only happened when it was put in reverse, was a intermittent short on the trailer plug, from stone damage.
Same symptoms .

check around the fusebox itself for any non genuine wiring joined into the wiring for an ignition feed for a cb radio for example, I always look for add ons before I get too deeply into the genuine circuitry.

Hmmmm, just had a look through the schematics, that is a very busy little fuse but doesn't seem to run any motors so doubt if it will be battery related.
It goes everywhere many different ecu's sensors, alternator reverselight switch, inhibitor switch on the autos, just goes on and on.
You have to try to narrow it down, think, have you or anyone else fitted anything in the recent past that involved a live supply or drilling and screwing?
Next is to try to see when I blows, what switch did you use, the turn signals could do it, but so could a dozen other things.

If you cant narrow it down like this and really feel like you want to tackle the problem yourself there is a useful tool you could make to assist in tracing it if it is a wiring rub through somewhere.

This could be an extremely difficult problem to pinpoint if it is intermittent and could take a very long time depending how lucky you are.

Like I said, you have to narrow it down, it will be a difficult enough job for a sparkie looking at the car, to do it via a forum could be near impossible. I have to be careful what advice I give you because if you damage your car following what you thought I ment I am liable for the damage, and I don't carry professional liability insurance any more.

Here are the schematics and a lot of other useful info.

Where abouts are you?

DO NOT PUT A HEAVIER FUSE IN, EVER.

problem with this forum is that a lot of people come in and ask questions with their first posts, find out what they need or solve their problem then never come back in to finish off the thread.
Your problem will undoubtedly be passed back to the dealers if it is a 15 model.

When the fuse blows, does it blow the top right off the element and leave a big gap, or does it look more like the element melted and only have a small fracture?

Fuse blows well clear and it happens as soon as reverse is engaged

You just pinpointed the problem area,
Are there any non genuine reverse lights fitted, if so inspect the wiring to them and if no damage is found disconnect them and see if the short goes away.
If it is a manual disconnect the reverse light switch and see if it stops blowing, with ign on engine NOT running bridge the reverse light switch wires, if the lights come on but blows the fuse when the switch is re connected it needs a new switch, I have seen this several times in various Toyotas.
If the fuse blows when u bridge the switch wires, go looking for a damaged rear harness and look inside the light fittings for faults.

If it is an auto don't do the switch thing, do everything else then get professional help.

If you are not confident don't do anything, you can make it a lot worse, very quickly. Be sure the switch you are looking at is the right switch. With late model electronics, the damage is done before you see the spark, if you poke the wrong place.

Never put a heavier fuse in. So many times I have looked at melted wiring that is obvious that it had a very large fuse or piece of wire in the holder, but when I saw it, it had a fuse half the rated size in the holder.

good luck.
