Hey guys

last weekend i was out 4x4ing with my mates and killed my alternator from the wet im guessing iv just put an exchange alternator in and am going back out 4x4ing again tonight, its rather wet and dont want to kill another one, is there anyway you can cover it? or do anything so that it wont die

Its not the water that kills them its the mud. Just wash it out well when you get back. Don't put an after market one in it either. They are crap and expensive. Get your genuine one rebuild. Should only cost about $300.

Dirt and mud gets in between the bushes that causes problems with alternators and not water. Grab some WD-40 and spray into the alternator, spinning at the same time to remove any crap inside.

Mud plays havoc on everything, should always clean where possible!

i cleaned and cleaned both times mine failed, the first time was the genuine toyota one. And the second was an after market one which i washed with fresh water right after the light came on and even tried low pressure compressed air but still stayed on??

Maybe take it easier in the mud or get a high mount alternator bracket made up.

How many kms did the genuine one do? It might have worn out normally but the after market one is just shit. I had an after market one in mine and it died in no time. Got my money back and got my original one rebuilt.

well the genuine one is 24 years old lol!!! so it was getting up there but still it do think the mud had killed it. because it was fine until i went out that night with my mates

Ive managed to save my mates alternator that had stopped charging.

Remove it and take the brush holder off the the back (brown plug) Chances are that mud will have jammed the brushes out...so they dont make contract and hence dont charge. WD40 helps to free them along with some poking and scraping with a screwdriver and pick.

I only found this out after I pulled apart mine afted I had replaced it....

simple answer is stay out of muddy water, it not just your alternator its getting into, if you want to play be prepared to pay

I'll drive around muddy puddles every time unless there is no other viable option. I've trashed too much stuff playing in the mud and have learnt my lesson.

I remember when i first bought my hilux. Went and found some muddy puddles and slammed through at a rate of knots. Spent rest of wekeend cleaning mud out from orifices i didnt know exist. Not again. THese days i avoid unnecessary abuse of the vehicle.

I think most places you can get away with avoiding the mud ... and using 4wd to get to nice spots, rather than going out just to rip up mud pits for the sakes of it.

Interestingly, my alternator recently packed it in, and i took it to 3 x different auto-elecs who supposedly rebuild alternators, and all 3 said they wouldnt do mine (2006 model) as they are too expensive to pick apart and rebuild / replace pulleys etc, and its cheaper to buy a new aftermarket one.

So ive still got my broken one in a box in the shed. and i bought an aftermarket one. which lastest 2 weeks, died on the way home from newvember overcharging at 18.9v. So warranty replaced it 2 weeks ago and im running my 2nd aftermarket one now.. no problems .. yet..

but i'd still like to get my original one rebuilt if i could as a spare.

I couldn't find anyone around the Newcastle area to rebuild mine either, and have an aftermarket one in there now.

I try to avoid muddy from now on as well as its just too damn expensive.

just bought an alternator from Terrain Tamer... after going through a dozen deep river crossings on the w'end my after market one from ebay died.Terrain Tamer make theirs to oem specs and are good quality units.. don't buy them from ebay a small bit of water in them and they're useless. expensive lesson learnt !!

NAE fixed mine after a dunk in muddy water!
