installing fog lights with existing pre wiring

Not another fog light wiring thread!

Postby Mick4x4 on Thu, 06 Aug 2009 9:42 +0000

hey guys,
done plenty of searching both here and in general, I've managed to get my self into a state of confusion.

I'm wiring my fog lights up using a normal relay arrangement, rather than playing with the factory wiring under the dash, I've worked with negative switch wiring before in my old commodore ute but can't for the life of me remember what goes where.

Of course, the 87's are going to the foglights, and they are earthed aswell, I want to have them switchable from the dash, and only on when at least the parkers are on (so parkers/low/high beams) so my thought was to tap into the parker light wiring, will that work?

It seems from all the reading this is what I need to do, please correct me if I am wrong:

30 - Fused from positive post of battery
85 - one of the parker wires, switched at the dash
86 - the other parker wire

Thanks guys, hope you can set me straight before I tear anymore hair out

thanks have read that thread, however that's the wiring and triggers for spot lights, I want the fog lights activated off the parkers and dash switch not the high beams.

Nah the factory spottys are triggered from the parkers.... you hook em up to the factory loom at the front and cut into the pink cable from the stalk and you have the same function as the factory spotty/fogs...

im trying to avoid cutting into wires under the dash, the wires going to the actual parker light must be able to trigger the relay somehow? I'm sure I did it on the old ute but can't remember how I had it done :x

thanks guys

To be honest... the wire under the dase is easier to get to as it runs right past the inspection panel on the lower RHS with the current switches in it... I simply opened that, found the wire and put the switch in between and bingo... all a goer... Toyo already have the releys etc installed... just hook em up at the front from the factory loom, install switch and your away. But you could go your way and put anoter reley and then wire up a switch from the parkers power wire..

thanks mate, seems like it will be easier to tap that wire, and a bit neater than running an external relay and the wires to power it up.

will head out now and see if I can find it coming off the stalk, when I do, it's just an earth trigger isn't it?

Edit: Just had a look at the plug coming off the indicator stalk, no pink wires on it at all?? it's an 05 extra cab SR5, not that I expect they changed wiring looms..

Thanks heaps to Quinny for his help and the copy of the EWD.

For anyone with an 05/06, you won't have the pink wire off the stalk, you'll need to follow the instructions in this:
shed.php?view=1&article=50&id=

I was unsure of where 2J was, the EWD lays it out clearly on page 28, once I knew where it was, all was good.

black one goes to earth, blue one to 2j pin 13 and the yellow looks to be an illumination wire, does the switch have a light to show when the fog lights are on?

nah, but from futher reading combination meter 8 does more than I thought...I've had another read of it, and if you splice the illumination wire in between 2S pin 23 and 2Q pin 30 that should do it as the factory LED sits in there

What year model have you got?

If its 05/06 use the green/black wire, its at 2J pin 13 (take the inspection cover off under the steering wheel, far right upper in the bank of 5 plugs, 2nd pin from the top on the LHS) , otherwise you are better off using the pink wire that goes to the stalk, there's a few threads about it.

There's a pic of the junction blocks in the EWD, if you want a copy drop me a pm with your email and ill forward it.

Hi All,

For all the elec techies out there i need some help with a swicth yep Fog light switch, ive got 2 new switches from Iron Man today,

See pics,

Does any one know where all the wiring goes please ? the IPF Loom was a Piece of Pi*S to work out but the Factoruy Fog plug n Loom ive got bugger all what the wires all mean ?

Factory Panel with new Swicthes

Image

Factory loom Wires, i dunno what they all mean ones red, with blue lines, one green and 2 white with black stripes.

Image

Iron Man Plug, that goes into swicth i note that there is a black wire also going into a red power wire ( i presume ) but im sure i can pair them apart

Image

The IPF spots work a treat and when on , the light emblem glows orange when on , and off when not in use.

Hope someone can help its been annoying me for sometime, not being able to use mt fogs and or spots, but at least the spots work now.

Cheers

My copy is in color... Strange.... Also, wire color is noted next to each as an abreviation..
G Green...
G-W - Green White
G-B - Green Black
R Red
R-W Red White...

It may be diferent to yours though... (shouldnt but could be...)

So you used the IPF loom for a set of spotties and the switch is one of the ones shown in the bottom LHS of the first pic...

And you're also trying to setup a set of bumper or fog lights of the factory loom, the foggies are connected at the front via the factory loom and the second switch shown is required to switch them on and off but ou're not sure where to splice in? is that it....

Are you also happy for them to work if switched on as soon as the parkers are on or do you want them on in high beam only?
