camper trailer electricals

camper trailer electricals

Postby scooter3 on Sun, 16 Dec 2012 9:36 +0000

Hi guys,
As per wholehogs post re this subject.
I put multi meter on anderson plug connecting camper to hilux and found it was running 13.59 volts at the plug (with ctek charger running).
My question is ,should I have power running backwards like that, or should I fit a Duel battery controller to camper to stop power running backwards to vehicle?
Also I have duel yellow optima batteries in camper but aren't earthed to camper body , should they be?

cheers scooter3

It will only go back to the CTek..which is a charger/ isolater..so that where it stops.... just make sure it is fused
Your camper batteries should be earthed to the camper IMHO.... :D

G'day wholehog,
thanks for the quick response ,I sorta didn't expect it seeing as it was an oldish post.
I should clarify that the ctek (25amp) isn't permently connected to the system ,it's only attached when charging from 240v.
The electrics (lights ,spare wheel hoist & water pump ) run through a fuse box.Which brings back the question ,in your opinion ,would a dbc be the go ?

thanks

litle bit of debate going on in another post regarding DC/DC chargers....
Have a bit of a search ..but basically u should at least fit a isolater into your hilux to stop the camper draining your car battery....
THats where the debate begins....wheter or not a DC/DC charger is warranted.....
if i where to do it again i would go in this direction..

http://www.traxide.com.au/CWK_2B.html

running that set-up with a alternator booster diode ...minimum 6 B&S wire to the rear of the hilux...u will charge your camper batteries quicker than by using a DC/DC charger.... In my opinion of course....

Head on over to my http://www.myswag.org an have a read thru the electrical sections over there :D

The "no cost" way out of your prob scooter would be to electrically disconnect the hilux from the trailer when not in transit. Of course this totally relies on you remembering to connect/disconnect. That should keep your minister of war and finance happy :D
I'm 100% sure....I think
