Hi Guys Just Put a CTEK dcdc charger in my 2012 hilux. Just wondering if anyone has had any issues with high operating temperature under the bonnet. The user manual says it can take up to 50c but how hot does it really get under the bonnet? should i put the temperature sensor on the battery where it says to, or should i just put it as far away from the engine as i can?? haha

thanks guys.

Mate I haven't had a issue with mine it's located next to the battery.

...a lot more than 50.

Who sold you that? It's intended to boost voltage to a battery at the end of long runs eg to a caravan/camper trailer

it doesn't just boost voltage, it charges batteries according to optimized charging profiles to reduce sulfation and increase capacity.

Mines done 32000kms in the same spot as that^ photo, some hard and hot ones too, no probs so far.

They are some serious sized cables for 20Amps over 10cm! not that theres anything wrong with that.

My local ARB store said they have installed hundreds under the bonnet and had no issues thus far so hopefully you wont have any issues.

I had the same concerns about the heat but also water and dust so have spent the extra time and money and am currently in the process of installing the D250S and Smartpass behind the rear seat. I like to keep my engine bay clean so the risk of them getting rather wet opposed to splashed was high. Also having the two units I really couldn't find somewhere to mount them under the bonnet so opted to use some of the room behind the seats. A real pain due to the size of the cable recommended when installing them remotely of the batteries but I hope it will all be worth it.

Even when I have pulled over, opened the bonnet and put my hand on the charger, its only just warm.

Did you mix up your name and your password for this forum?

192, keep in mind that underbonnet ambient temps - and the surface temps of many underbonnet components - will almost match coolant temps under some conditions such as summer traffic, slow going off-road etc and I think you will discover that is FAR greater than C-Tecs' specified 50 deg C

It does give a visual warning if ctek or battery are overheated, I have checked under bonnet and my ctek on a 35+ degree day on Fraser after pulling someone out and through Indian head with foot to floor for a long time! you know how it goes.. No visual warning seen to date.

Again mine has over 32000 Kms in the above position and no probs whatsoever.

Hi guys have just purchased a ctek unit for my 2012 hilux. They sent out a relay with it also. Are any of you guys running a relay before the unit? I'm no auto elec by any stretch but I would have thought the ctek unit would act as a relay? And I will be running a regulated solar panel off the unit. Cheers!

Nope, no relay in my installation. The unit is voltage sensing so there shouldn't be a need for one.

Cheers for that! I couldn't imagine it needing one! Thanks!

my ctek D250 dc to dc has been in the same location for three years and it died after a long return Bruce highway trip. I am quite disappointed and think ctek stuff are over rated.

And what location did that happen to be?

That temp sensor is ment to attach to the battery so it know how hot the battery is so it can adjust it's charging profile... If you stick it somewhere else it's going to think the battery is hotter or colder then it actually is and it would charge it effectively
