Parallel batteries

Parallel batteries

Postby Matthall1 on Mon, 21 May 2012 9:21 +0000

Hi guys hope I'm not going over things already said but I am wanting any info from people that have a 12v parallel dual battery setup. I'm looking at running 2 optima batteries in parallel to give me about 100ah of deep cycle with 1300cca. Can anyone see any problems with this setup in terms of charging etc.

Wtf u need 1300cca for?
Dual battery setup usually are in parallel but this will not double the output. The only way to double output is to wire them in series which would also double voltage to 24V. No good

I think you're on the right track, parallel doubles the current and series doubles the voltage.

Check with Bansheebuz, he is very helpful and can help you out with the bits you need.

I'm running a stock dual battery (parallel) system in my 06 2.5D4D. Here they call it the "Cold Area Spec". The factory setup has two 70Ah 630CCA Yuasa 80D26 L-MF batteries and it managed to hold the vehicle starting about 10 times & moving for 4 days with a dead alternator "current stabilizer" (not sure if that's the name, but basically not charging). I have a lot of fun in the winter also with no issues what so ever - Winch definitely has no complaints on the setup :)

If you wish to go down this road make sure you have the closest possible pair of batteries (if possible two sequential serial numbers). The batteries cannot be different or they will try to balance each other out and you can end up with overcharging 1 battery and undercharging the other.

You might need to look up the alternator also. While it may not need to be beefed up should you go through a deep cycle it will try to charge both batteries and the stock 80A alternator may not be enough. It worked fine for 6 years in mine but if you drive short distances and play music/winch/camp etc. it may need to be a bit larger.

I am thinking the same, if you look after them well, eg charge them every 2 months with a CTEK and never drain them below half capacity, you do not need an isolator. You need to pay attention to the positive positive connection. Install two fusible links near the termal to prevent fire.

Thanks for all the feed back guys. After speaking with a couple of auto sparkies this option seems to be more trouble than it's worth. Think I'll just go down the standard setup road with a bcdc 1220.
