Jake's "budget" ln106 build

Postby JakeLux97 on Wed, 30 Aug 2017 10:14 +0000

G'day guys
It's a 1997 ln106 dual cab 4wd hilux with a slow 2.8 litre (3L) 5 speed manual non-turbo diesel making a mind blowing 55kw at the crank when it rolled off the showroom floor 20 years ago. Solid axles with leaf springs all round so it's rough as guts to ride in but goes good off road.

Been lurking these threads for last 6+ months gathering info and ideas on just about everything so haven't really felt the need to post but I thought I better chuck up build thread to keep track of everything I've done.
I bought this lux 2 days before getting my p's (about 8 months ago) and drove it straight from the licensing centre to Lancelin (about an hour north of perth) and thrashed for a week in the dunes with my mates on my school leavers.

Anyway here's a few photos of it before I changed anything

So as it sits now, mods are:
31x10.5 BF Goodrich KO1 all-terrains (barely-legal tread)
on 15x7 black sunnies
Irwin alloy bullbar (Rattle-canned saturn black)
Some dodgy side steps
Oricom radio and ariel (Broken)
Aftermarket Kenwood stereo and speakers
Rhino roof racks (tradie style)
Kings 2mx3m awning
Heavy duty Terrain-Tamer clutch
Ebay wing mirrors
Electric radiator fan (previous owner mod)
Air-con delete (Previous owner)
Spotties removed (courtesy of corrugated roads)
Assumed factory height leaf springs
"West coast suspension" shocks
I also pissed off the TJM chrome roll bar

Photos of how it looks now

The main plan for this car is build a capable off road rig than i can still drive to work/school everyday but not spending too many $$$

Near future mods, in order of completion:

Ebay snorkel
Cheap 20inch light bar (4wd supa centre?)
Shorten rear bar to sit higher, hopefully via a mate who's a fabricator
New rubber (open to recommendations)
Front recovery points (Can't find any in stores)
Pacemaker extractors and new exhaust
Welded rear diff (maybe auto locker)
Front locker (Auto or E-Locker)

Other Possible mods:

2 inch lift and new shocks
Scrub bars and rock sliders
Find a factory headboard, I dont like big chrome roll bars
Turbo? 5L swap?

Welcome to the addiction Jake. I reckon the 31x10.5 are a good size for an everyday. If your putting in a snorkel for puddle crossings, don't forget to extend breathers too, couple of good threads on doing that cheap. Be wary of a welded rear end in a road going car, any roundabout in the wet will have you sliding, fun till you hit the kerb and dent a rim or fall on a wing mirror.

Cheers

Yeah the 31s go alright, 110kph is just over 3k rpm since I put the rack and awning on which isn't great considering I try to never rev past 3k on the black top so gotta I cruise on 100-105kph unless I get my hands on some 32s.
I drove my mates turbo s13 around for week on bald tyres and welded diff so I'm fairly confident I can handle lux haha
Didn't even think about breathers but they are a must do, Cheers for that Crit :D

Well a lot of progress was made over the weekend, some forwards but most of it was backwards.
Fitted a Tuff-Terrain snorkel and a 4wd supacentre 42 inch light bar which both look sick.

She's slowly getting there

Image

But like I said there were a few setbacks, Between 2,000rpm and 2,500rpm the snorkel vibrates and resonates crazy loud so we put an extra hose clamp on the ram head but that didn't solve so I'll to try put rubber on every contact point to try stop the vibration.
Also the light bar only comes on when the low-beam headlights are on instead of high-beam but this seems like a common problem so should be an easy fix.

And lastly I ripped out the all the dodgey wiring a previous owner had put in for his bull-bar and roll-bar spotties

Image

Photo doesnt make it look half as bad as what is was!

Well I've done a little but since the last post, couple weekend trips and a few more mods :D
Got my hands on 32x11.5 kumho MT51's, man do they make a world of difference. My old mans prado and a couple d40s really struggled to get a slippery muddy hill on all terrains but the MT51's just crawled up it without spinning for sliding.
Image
32's have no noticeable difference to power or acceleration till about 85kph but it cruises on the highway much nicer now at lower rpms.
Image
The 32's stick out a bit so I've got some rubber flares from clark rubber, real hard to screw when there's less than 5mm of metal hit but hopefully it'll keep the cops happy
Image
Image

Also finally got the diff breathers fitted, its pretty painful to work under this thing with all the mud and dirt falling off, to think I was doing a good job cleaning the underside

This is probably why there's so much mud tho, its too fun to slide around with mates
Image

Now I just need to finish up all the wiring for the led bar and awning lights and start going on more trips :D

I can second that
Crap in clutch
Broken fan blades
Block ratiator (and you can't clean it in the bush)

Other then that, there grate cars, I've taken mine all over Aust 2.8 with 435k on clock and it's has 33's in for last 160k so well over 450k in real km's

Best advice I can say is for every 2 mods you do you'll require 1 to make them work

Don't wast money on eBay snorkel you'll be buying it again and will cost you more in long run
32" 265 wide tyres and best size with 1-1.5" lift
Remember your wms-wms is only 1400mm, ifs is 1470mm and post of 1600mm so the more you lift the less stable and your not as wide as they are
farting is alot like jxxxxxg off. both provide instant gratification, but neither is a long term solution to the actual problem......................

This was the slippery mud type not the sinking boggey, get your car stuck for 5 hour type. Driving on it is like driving on thick ice, everywhere in front and in between the wheel wells was clean, the only mud on the bullbar and windscreen was from the dirt bike roosting me
32" 265 wide tyres and best size with 1-1.5" lift
I'm leaning more towards staying at the same height but replacing the suspension since it is well past its prime. Not really sure if its lifted atm but it does have aftermarket shocks.

Personally replace with lift 1-2" no bigger
And fit some 265/75r16
You won't lose to much power or brakes and that size

And bigger and performance is right out the window, you'll fell like it a race car now compaired to fitting 33's

Don't wanna go any bigger than 2 inch for sure because then you gotta play around with high steer and all sorts of things, it's got plenty of clearance anyway.
33s will definitely slow it down tonnes being 12.5 wide, though I have seen some low km turbo motors hanging around, but that would blow out the budget [emoji23]

Been a while since I updated on this site, haven't made many big changes to the old girl just fixing up all the little bits and bobs and adding a few small mods to make camping a little easier. Although I did stick an led strip to the awning and wired up a couple cigarette lighter plugs in the back that are constant powered so I charge phones and lights etc without leaving the keys in the car.
The led strip puts out heaps of light (enough to read a book without a headlamp) and is super easy and cheap to do.
I also neatened up the electric thermo fan wiring so its waterproof and hopefully much more reliable now.

and not to mention I bent my passenger sidestep while having some fun out on the mundaring powerline track

so now sliders are higher on the wishlist

also if any any of you blokes would beable to confirm that she sits at standard height, blokes on facebook seem to think it is but its pretty tall for standard, centre of the hub to guard is 590-600mm and ground to sidesteps on 32s is 500ish mm

120 prado with a 2 inch lift for comparison
