Nice build jake, i used to build trays, canopies bullbars etc for a living years ago and this has inspired me to want to build my own now, sux i dont have the room though, great job and well thought out. Im interested to see what else you add to this, like spare wheel mounts, fridge recess, water tank, false floor with draws... possibilities are endless

No worries mate. Here's a bit of a breakdown.

Tray Costs.
$80- Sides and wheel arches (bought off an old bloke who had a tray in his back yard)
$130- Steel (Some of the stuff was leftovers from old jobs that was laying around, maybe $80-$100 worth)
$180- Check floor
$20- Lights
$40- Number plate mount
$450- Sandblasting and powdercoating (Mates Rates)

Canopy Frame Cost.
$95- Steel
$200- Ally roof pressing (Mates Rates)
$15- Paint
$30- Fixings
$15- Foam tape
$15- Sealant

Thinking and planning costs.
$150. Beer

Whole thing came in around $1200. Way cheaper than any decent tray I could have bought.
The company I get my steel from only charges for what you want. Most places will sell by the length only.

Cheers

All those things are in the pipeline as well as way more.

Finished off the fridge slide today. Cost me $160 in material and 2.5 hours.

Here's a couple.

Started by making the 50x50 angle top frame with 10mm clearance on all sides.
Cut a piece of form ply, glued that in for the fridge to sit on.
Fixed the runners to the top frame with 5/16' rivets.
Flipped the whole thing over to make the base frame.
Base frame is 50x50 angle on three sides and a piece of flat bar as bracing across the slide out end.
Fixed the outer runners to the base frame with the 5/16" rivets.

Slides really well and is a super cheap way of doing it. Haven't fitted it to the car yet. Will do once the canvas is on.

Nice one jake, have you got a qoute for your canvas? I will need to get canvas work done soon also. Your not having lockable mesh doors for security on your canopy?

Yeah I've got a few quotes. Cheapest I could find was $1000.
Have thought about caging it all and designed the framework so it could be added if need be.
Still undecided if I will but I guess the security aspect is a good point. MORE WORK!

Have decided to go with the lockable cage on gas struts then canvas over that.
I have two options on this.

1. Build the cage to lock down to the existing drop sides
or
2. Take the sides off and build to lock into the lip on the tray.

I'm leaning towards the second as access to the back will be way easier.
If anyone has any input on any pros and cons of doing this each way that would be great.

Hey jake, I had a similar set up on my cruiser ute, I opted to keep the sides on but thats only because my drop side was also my camp kitchen bench, the dropside had wire rope to hold it up and I would cook and prepare meals etc on one side, if I was to do it again I would not have drop sides purely for the wieght factor and have my "kitchen" set up in a slide out draw. In saying this it depends what the main purpose of your lux is? Is it purely A tourer? Something you will take off road just for the sake of goin off road? Or will it be used for work etc?

Having the mesh doors and struts allows you open up the mesh doors and having some shade/ protection under it, you could always have the canvas made up so on the doors it is doubled up in length, so when the door is up you can unfold the canvas side for more coverage, make some small extensions that will slot/ fit into the bottom of your mesh doors ( or a telescopic section) to hold up the excess canvas, no need for tying ropes etc? Just a thought......

Thanks for the tip on John Clough. Dropped by there today. Looks like a good operation with quality work. Price was cheaper than any of the other quotes also.

Hopefully cage this thing by the end of the weekend and get it over there next week.

All sorted. Everything worked out exactly like I imagined. Really happy with how it all turned out.

Work on the doors.

Check plate sides that replace the drop sides as waterproofing. They are surrounded by bubbleseals, seem to keep the water out from the hose.

All caged off and lockable.

And finally.....

Also threw in the 70 litre water tank somewhere in between all that.
