Hilux 2013, DIY OverHead Console

Hello,

Shortly for the introduction:

I had to put the CB-radio and GPS voice amplifier (many GPS-s are too quiet) to somewhere and for CB-radio installation I had special requirement - no need for radio removal if thief danger exists. Additionally I wanted to use two antennas and make quick switch between antennas using "coaxial-relay". After many "prototyping" (using thick carton) I found the design what fits well into my car.

Materials used:

1) 6mm plywood (film laminated, both sides)

2) Aluminium four-corner cross-section pipe 10mm*10mm

3) Aluminium four-corner cross-section pipe 15mm*15mm

4) thick imitation leather

5) M3 screws, ca 150pcs (different lengths), same amount washers, hex nuts

6) Double sided adhesives (brand 3M only) used for LED panel mount, mounting decorative frames for LED panels.

7) Thin adhesive films (brand: 3M only, made for external use on car bodies - so it is durable and replaceable!) used to make frames for LED panels and covering certain edges for physical protection.

8) Different epoxies (liquid and non liquid) used for screw covering, fixing, making custom made sockets to fit into Toyota original connector.

9) Rocker switches ordered from http://www.oznium.com/rocker-switch Avoid cheap copies. I had to throw away the first shipment what I did receive via eBay. If someone is interested what is the real difference I can make some macro-photos to explain how differently the plastic can be handled in manufacturing process (the quality of the molding form etc.)

10) Some materials from Office shops: a) small metal paper stand, used for speaker and CB radio speaker "grille" b) thick transparent folder used as LED panel windows glass material.

11) All the cables are crimped and for TAP connections 3M Self-stripping Electrical Tap Connector 558 used.

12) neodymium magnets used for panel hiding the CB radio and on back side covering the storage space.

Nice work. I've always wondered how a roof console gets secured without putting holes through the roof :-)

Hello,

I try to explain but if it does not help, I can offer second option*

You need little tool which can be made using peace of plastic and pen. Glue the pen with hot glue to this peace of plastic (ie. some old plastic like credit card).

Take a carton and cut it roughly to same shape as the ceiling (roof).
Then ask a help from girlfriend or somebody else to hold the carton against ceiling. Now take this tool so that one side of the plastic card is moving over the ceiling material and the same time it makes line on your carton (parallel offset is few cm, depending of your plastic card dimensions). Now you have the exact shape of the ceiling.

My english skills is not very good, so I have to apologize. Hopefully you get the idea, if not the second option* is that I can make this shape on paper and send it via mail(paper) to you if you need it.

Tomorrow I'm going to replace all the original speakers in my ute, so I can make this extra move and capture the shape on the paper if you need it. If there is interest, I can post the pictures of the speaker replacemet later. The radio is already replaced: http://www.carjoying.com/in-dash-gps-navigation-system/toyota-head-units/joyingr-best-aftermarket-2015-automotive-plug-and-play-1024-600-head-unit-android-4-4-4-kitkat-double-din-quad-core-rk3188-car-stereo-dvd-player-6-95-inch-16gb-memory-autoradio-audio-video-nav.html

Modified software is uploaded (rooted) and IMEI is changed (required to get Sygic or any other commercial navi to work).
By defaut the unit has IMEI like 123456789012345, but it is not valid for commercial apps, so IMEI needs to be changed.
By default it has iGo installed, but I like to have some backup (navi with different maps).
