2013 D4D turbo upgrade

Postby speakeasy on Sun, 08 Sep 2013 6:29 +0000

Well it was time to replace my 08 hilux for a new truck, I could not think of any truck that I would rather own so I placed an order on a brand new 2013 TD SR5 4x4 dual cab.
Image

The last truck was a lot of fun and I was happy with the off-road capabilities, the lockers, lift and 33” KM2’s it held it’s own on the tracks. When it came to the road it was not so inspiring, exhaust, chip and a dyno tune achieved 125kw at the wheels, a 30% increase and a very noticeable improvement in acceleration. Still not exactly inspiring.

When it came to this truck I started looking into performance upgrades past the “chip and exhaust” packages, information was hard to come by. There is a heap on the US trucks, look at Diesel Power Magazine and you will find no end of tuned diesel trucks, daily drivers through to sled pulling monsters. Then there is the guys from Thailand, such as forum member adityasali who have no fear in bolting up a massive turbo to a shiny new hilux or Dmax and whaling it down the drag strip.

After some searching I did have decided on the full replacement turbo from AXT as a starting point, with a purpose made dump pipe from Taipan and King Brown 3” exhaust. The programing will be handled by a combination of the CPU supplied by AXT and the a Xede Processor from ChipTorque (reclaimed from my last truck). The standard injectors and intercooler will remain in use for the time being, see what happens if I get bored later.

The transmission is a auto, had a manual in the last truck but I was thinking the auto would be a bit more suitable off road with the slight increase in turbo lag, also the auto should be a bit nicer on the rest of the drive line with the smoother shifts and no side stepping the clutch at 2500 RPM. I am a little concerned about the extra power and there is a few reports of excess heat killing the toyota autos, after toying with the idea of fitting a upgraded cooler I settled on a valve body upgrade instead. With any luck the increased oil pressure and reduced slipping in the clutch packs should help keep the temp down, something I am sure will need to monitored.

There is the normal array of bar work, suspension and lockers to go on also, nothing that has not be done a thousand times. I will be sharing more on the performance upgrades as there it is hard to find detailed information on the hilux turbo upgrade options. I hope to end up with a truck that is perfectly suitable as a daily driver, can tow over 2 ton when required, capable off-road, reliable, and has somewhere over 170kw at the rear wheels. Not sure exactly what we will achieve but at least it will be online for others to learn from.

Toyota has completed the 1000km logbook service so the with 1200kms on the clock we have started the stipdown ready for the new parts, the valvebody has already been sent to Wholesale automatic transmissions and hopefully the rest of the parts arrive for assembly later this week. The guys at Autotech here in Canberra will be doing all the install and tuning as they have done on my last 3 cars.
Wish me luck!

what boost are u going to run mate. also i would recommend u to get a front mount or axt pwr water to air intercooler because ur engine will get hot running 170rwkw running the stock intercooler. and i would also recommend getting the 12% bigger injectors from baileys diesel group. and what does ur chip adjust as well the more things ur chips can adjust the better tuning u can have and safer the tune as well bud. :D

Basically just posting here to follow this thread.

You gona run a gturbo? How likely is it that you'd get like 200kw and 600nm running 30psi, 12% injectors and a suitable intercooler? And am I right in saying that more torque would be beneficial of you're going a tow vehicle? What torque are ya aiming for?

running 30psi for 200kw it would be a wild tune for the afr it would be around a 17:1 ratio still safe put running 35psi will be safer. and also the 600nm doesnt sound right cuz i got 525nm running 18psi.

he is going to run a axt turbo set up. Matt from just autos has had some experience in turning axt turbo set ups.

Thanks, ok another rookie question, is axt a brand? Or is it a type of turbo (like vvt)? Sorry for being a bit behind the 8-ball...

pretty sure it is another vvt turbo. they can also do full custom twin turbo set up for the luxs as well.

Please excuse my lack of knowledge on the exact details but I will try to answer any questions.

From my understanding the turbo is a ball bearing turbo, it runs a exhaust turbine that from or similar to the standard Toyota item, this is matched to a larger compressor wheel. They use the stepper motor from the variable vane turbo so that the fault light does not show on the dash. We did consider a hi flowed VVT but decided that the longer life expectancy and increased flow of the ball bearing turbo was worth the slight trade off in low down response

As for towing, I do not tow a great deal maybe once a month at best. I am investigating the option of running dual maps so that it can be run with a more conservative tune when needed. This would be a great thing for the drive line but I need a to check with the guys from AXT if the computer that handles the injector timing has the capability.

While I have ideas about running a bit over 30psi over 600nm, I am not going to get caught up in the quest for numbers. As someone alluded to the warranty may be affected and we will see what we get with the standard injectors and intercooler while keeping the AFR and EGT safe.

The dump pipe has arrived and it is one shiny bit of gear, should look good with my 22" chrome wheels, KIDDING. It has that HPC coating to reduce heat under the bonnet, I am sure it will all be dirt brown in a few months.

The exhaust is also in stock, nothing exciting. I had the same one on the last truck and it sounded good without being cop bait.

looks good bud. i dont know about the longer life expectancy from the mods that have been done to the high flow turbos.

i think uni chip adjusts injection timing.

U can run 50psi plus but will be no good if u can not get the fuel in. The standed injectors for your model will max u out around 147 rwkw or 200rwhp but that is running loads of rail pressure. Good to see how u go but think u may find u will need injector and pump upgrades with a good intercooler to get any more.

I know from my days messing with fast cars, 20psi was about the upper limit for the non ball bearing type turbos. This may not be the case but the ball bearing turbo will have scope for further boost if I ever go that way, to be honest getting reliable and detailed information during this process has been the hardest part of all. There is a heap of opinion and a few claims but little else, I am sure there must be a heap of guys that have done similar mods but I haven't found much.

Now days we use non ball bearing turbos to handle bigger boost levels not ball bearings

These figures are with 33inch tyre u can pick up about 20 rwhp with the factory wheels
