Ln65 build social rig started working on it again

Postby Hilux4Life on Tue, 21 May 2013 6:55 +0000

hey guys i started a hilux build about 6months ago its started as a 1986 ln65 hilux single cab completely stock i bought it off a mate and got it home and started chopping and havnt stopped in the last 6months haha its only slow as im only 16 and still at school and spending all my own money on it. so heres the mods done to it so far ifs box, RUF, powersteering, rear ifs diff housing, ifs leafs, ifs hubs, rear leafs, rear ubolt flip, diff Armour, longer brake lines, high steer, banana shackles, upper gusset, shock hoops, ifs hub spacers, ln106 calipers, ln106 rotors, front ubolt flip, 35x12.5r15 mickey thompsons nearly balled, hid lights, custom crossmember, 4.88 diff centres, welded rear centre and probably some more i have forgotten.

still need to do heaps like make rear shackles, exhaust, front dropped hanger, new engine mounts, glow plugs, water gauge, 2inch wheel spacers, fuel cell, tray, front bar, drive shaft spacer, engine lift, body lift, new crossmember, side steps, shocks, rear inboard kit, knuckle gusset, apr studs, longfields, reduction gears,37s and some other stuff

im thinking of putting a extra cab on or a 4runner cab on it

Did you do RUF with your high steer ? Was that enough to clear your 35s at full stuff ? Or have you pushed the diff forward as well ? Stance looks good btw but it looks like you will end up arse high once the rear shackles go in .

thanks chris yer i dont think i will ever finish haha. scott i did RUF with high steer i didn't do the diff push as i didn't think it really needed it. it clears the tires pretty good but i have only driven it 500m in 6months haha i haven't even flexed it lol :(. it should sit fairly flat im hoping, i still need to take the front leafs out and make a custom pack.

Scott, putting rear springs up front does move your diff forward around 2-3 inchs depending on what dropped hangers you use. Without the diff forward he would be munching the back of his wheelwell with the 35's.

Hilux4life nice truck, I would surgest you get some dropped hangers on the front there mate, without dropped hangers your pinion angle for your front drive shaft will be hidious and cuase you hassels. Looks like you have also cut into the inner guard to fit the shock hoops.. this isn't really necessary if running 12" shocks. What size do you plan to run? Make sure you cap the hole properly otherwise you will start to see cracks appear in your cab. Nice to see you have alot of my brothers parts on it! Reminds me of my truck at 17

thanks mate yer im ordering a dropped hanger off your brother soon just need some $$$ he makes some awesome products! yer i might get a new cab and put a body lift in so i don't have to cut the cab and im planing on running 12inch shocks. the shock hoops weren't going to fit without cutting the inner gaurd but on a mates ln106 he didn't have to cut the guard out. and my cab is a 2wd cab but i don't no if that makes a difference ?

hey guys bit of a update i have been stuffing around with the rear ifs leaf springs and heres what i have come up with.

its ifs leafs turned around i will have to buy new mounts and move them forward. it should give the car fairly good departure angle especially for leafs!!.whats your thoughts on doing this?

i still have to make shackles and get a order from lowrange im getting some shocks, auto locker, knuckle gussets and some other stuff. and getting a order off buddy just getting inverted rears, dropped hanger and some grease able bolts for the rear shackles . im thinking of running a auto locker in the front as i don't have enough money to put a air locker in the front. and its only a budget build and not getting driven on the road.

I wouldn't turn them around, I personally would get ifs leafs from a new hilux (Gen 5) as they are the same length however the diff is centered. Gives for better flex, better ride and also better departure. You can normally pick them up for 50-100$

The setup in the pic above would flex well but would ride like ass. Also I would move the mounts. IFS rears you have currently would make u r wheel base 1" longer if turned the right way around, new ifs rears would make it 3" longer (bit too long....) how you have it now I would expect it to be a limo.

Auto lockers work good, I have a spartan front ARB rear, never had any issues

i might think about that thanks aaron. im still not sure if i will do it i was just wondering what other peoples thoughts were i have seen a couple people do it and worked fairly good.kyall hills hilux he took to hilux meet last year had ifs leafs turned around he said they worked pretty good. so i will see what happens :) where its currently sitting the diff is sitting in the original position if i mounted it with the standard front mounts it looks like this haha. it looks like a limo  . well it looks like i might just get a auto locker then :D anything i need to look out for when driving with a auto locker?

It might make noises here or there, the spartans seem fairly quite.

Also I know that hilux, lets just say I like it now since the the new owners went over it and re did it all. This was it at hilux meet this year 8-)

Running the longer part of the leaf at the front is like having longer control arms on linked setups but I have only really seen it add travel on trucks running scissor shackles or buggy leafs . Current model lux leafs or BA falcon ute leafs seem to be the go if you just want to run extended shackles .
Any more pics of the black truck ? Why are the front guards cut in half ?

got to have a quick drive today. found out the tcase gear stick stuffed and it was stuck in 2wd so i had to use a ramp to reverse up the tree haha! it still has more to go but the front tire nearly hits the shock hoops and that's with ifs hubs on the front :/ looks like i might need some bigger offset rims or some 2inch wheel spacers.

ok so today i got to drive it again and i have run into a couple more problems! since i have taken leafs out of the front pack there is heaps more flex and now the leafs hit the ifs box! so looks like i need a dropped hanger and the drag link also hits the leafs, so i might buy a 2wd pitman arm apparently they work. the rear tires are hitting the bump stop mounts so i really need to put this ifs rear housing in! i also fixed the problem wit the leaf springs leaning in, i just swap them over to the other sides and now they sit nearly straight so thats lucky.the front drive shaft needed shortening but that was an easy job since its only a RHS drive shaft :D well theres a quick update! i will get some pictures up soon!

Re: Ln65 build social rig started working on it again

Postby Hilux4Life on Sun, 29 Sep 2013 11:21 +0000

well after sitting in the shed for nearly a month untouched i pulled it out yesterday and gave her a wash and started thinking about what im going to do with it. i have made the decision to finish it off slowly, im buying a 2wd tub for $100 off a mate and throwing that on there and cutting the hell out of the guards and bobbing it. it should look pretty sweet when that's done, and a mate of mine has an injector pump i might be able to steal. i just need to get it pressure tested and re-timed just to make sure its all ok, then i will throw it in and hopefully it all works out. then i just need another seat, rear drive shaft, dropped hanger, alternator wiring, rear ifs axles and it should be right to drive around for awhile! then just need a auto locker, shocks, inverted rear shock mounts, knuckle gussets, front bar and im pretty well set for awhile should look awesome with this bobbed tub! well hope you guys are happy im keeping it!
