Time to start putting some TLC in my 1984 single cab petrol Hilux.

I have just put a coat of decking oil on the rear tray to give the wood a nice brown color again. And repainted the mud flaps and frame of the tray.

Thinking about respraying the car a different colour but am still undecided on what colour to paint it.

Truck has a little bit of rust to it that i plan on getting rid of as soon as I can but I have no experience in doing this so all comments and suggestions are welcome.

Also wouldn't mind giving it a bit of a lift to fit 32's or 33's but I don't plan on spending too much money on this car so trying to do everything relatively cheaply..

First time driving it at a mates property got severely bogged.
It was in this car that i got properly hooked on getting offroad

Got the carby back from being cleaned the other day, popped it on last night and a bit of 'start ya bastard' squirted into it and it's running perfectly.

At my mates place next to his brothers patrol! Makes it look like a toy.



He is running 35x13.5x15 BFG crawlers noisiest and bumpiest tyre I have experienced yet. When you take off it feels like your running on 4 flat tyres

Whilst driving I realized there was something wrong with the brakes when I had a near miss because of the rear left wheel locking up under minimal pressure.
It was locking and not allowing you to put enough pressure on the the other brakes. So pretty much one wheel braking.

Took it to the mechanics and rear drums were rooted, no shoe left in one of them, and to add to that the vibrations and whining I had been experiencing at anything above 50 were due to the rear diff being f$@#&%.

Had a 2nd hand rear diff drum to drum put in from an 86' and now it drives like new, and the hand break works again!
Now it's time to give the front bar a new coat of paint and wire up some speakers in the beast.

How often should i do oil changes on this thing? It's got over 290'000 Km's on it. Should it be more regularly than a newer car?

I'd say they were lift springs that have sagged/flattened out over time, get some extended shackles. Some of buds banana shackles would probably work good as they'll clear the BodyMount. You'll probably find it will flex good, ive found old sagged spring generally flex good.

That's the way. Extended shackles, flat springs and shocks to suit the flex.

Sweet, cheers for the feedback. Any idea what new springs for just the front would cost?

I dunno about the flex. Speed bumps are horrible to hit with any speed.Its pretty stiff.

I wouldn't bother with springs chuck a set of shackles in first, it will be rough over bumps etc as you have minimal clearance to your bump stops looks like 40mm in that pic so it would be bottoming out quick.. If your chasing springs check your local 4x4 wreckers you'll pay around $50 for a pair and then pull them and your current pack apart and mix them to make a set to suit, lots of info on forums about setting leaf packs up etc

Had a 2.4 d and the springs sag, mine sagged in the first 15000k toyota replaced them under warranty but didn't last .Pulled them out and put sum ultimate springs in end of problem.And rode a whole lot better!
