ln106 dual battery/ surf air box conversion

Postby habuba on Thu, 15 Nov 2012 6:27 +0000

Hey everyone. My first post. thought i'd do a little run down on how
I set up more space for my 2nd battery (to come) in my ln106 dual cab.
I've done a bit of looking around and have seen a few pics and tuts explaining
what to do when going about putting in a second battery, but none really showed
the full details on how to get the surf box into a dual cab hilux.
Apologies in advance for the stupid rotation of pics
So here it is:

You'll obviously need a surf air filter box. I picked up mine from the wreckers for $30.
Heres mine when i picked it up.

Be sure to note where the bolts are. And keep all the little rubber feets if they are in good nic.

The above pic shows a cooling pipe (pardon my non mechanical jargon) running past the box.
theres a clip that wraps around that. keep it. its an important bolt holder
Image

Heres the trusty stock filter we all know and love
Image
But no space for a 2nd battery :(

Pull it all out, including the pipe from the filter to the motor. Should be 4 or so bolts and 3 pipe clamps.
Important:
If you have a snorkel ready to be fitted, take the air intake pipe coming from behind the headlamp out as well.
If you dont have a snorkel (possibly getting one in the future like me :)) just keep the ducting in.
You can plumb the new box into it.

I got the old rust bucket out of the surf and sanded it back and gave it a spray of matt black

The surf box cooling pipe clamp that i mentioned goes on the same place. One feet sits at a lower spot then the stock filter. you will see when you rest the new box in.

Sorry about bad quality
Image
The air intake pipe squeezes into the air box very tightly. i wouldnt be concerned about leakage, but if
you were, just ad some celastic or something similar before fitting.

Measure the size piping you need to get. its about 200mm s bend.
i bought some cold air intake ducting which bends into the shape you need while staying quite ridged.

Done!
Too easy mate.

Before and after pics:

As you can see, you have enough room to fit a battery under the hood.
Ill save some cash and upload some pics in the near future.

Hope this helps guys.
If more details are needed(its easy enough to wing it) you can pm me :)

Happy dune jumping

Then you go back to the wreakers and unpick the welds on the battery tray in the surf, then weld/screw that tray into yours and you have a factory battery tray to. You can also unpick the bracket of the surf to put on yours that will enable you to bolt the top bolt of the surf air cleaner also.

You don't need to mod the airbox to fit dual battery unless you want to fit twin n70 or bigger

Im running a single n70 (east/west std fitment)and n50 (north/south) on the drives side
with a larger then standard brake booster and master,(80 series)

farting is alot like jxxxxxg off. both provide instant gratification, but neither is a long term solution to the actual problem......................

That would be good to see. Different ways of setting up.

I had been given a battery tray already so I didn't bother with the one in the surf.

Looks really neat there. Maybe I could fit 3 batteries under the hood
More the better.

Cheers for that mate

hi mate , how did u get the flexy hose on because the out let on the air box is 2.5 inch (64mm) and the inlet on the manifold is 3.0 inch(76mm) iam doing the same mod .i got the surf air box and the battery tray, all holes drilled ,just have work out the hose from snorkel to air box and the flexy hose from air box to manifold. the hose from the snorkel needs to have a 45 degrees bend ,but same thing 2.5 inch to 3.0 inch with funny s bend and a 45 at the end so a day in the shed for nothing

Easy as. Just buy the 3inch flexy hose from autobarn. Cut the old hose in a strip. Like an o ring of rubber and fit the flexy tube over that and fit to car :)
Hope that helps

Are there any alternative air boxes that fit other than the surf? I am having a lot of trouble trying to find one in my neck of the woods?

You would have to find one that fits size wise, then make up some brackets of some description. Use nut-serts for a nice finish.
But no sorry. I don't know of any that would bolt straight in.
