Thanks Matt.

Headlights in it were sealed 55/60W and I have replaced them with these headlights. This is the same Ebay store I got the LED lightbar from. They have 2 up for auction each week and also sell them for $640. I won mine in an auction for $330. Every so often they take 50% off and sell them for $320

http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/PAIR-ALTEZZA ... 35bebacd15

And the Narva Plus 120 performance H4 bulbs.

http://www.narva.com.au/products/browse ... es#anchor5

That on it's own made a massive difference to the standard light output. Low beam is actually visible on the road! And the high beam on their own is quite good too.

I have braved the cold, worked out my camera settings and came up with some shots to show the difference. I made some very small adjustments to the spots and lightbar to optimise the light.

Must say it is awesome to drive along dark country roads with highbeam on now! Will make a huge difference for long night trips!

The combination of spread of crisp white light from the Lightbar and distance of the spots are a real winner IMO.

High Beam, LED Lightbar and Spotties. The furtherest clump of grass sticking out on the right hand side of the track almost dead centre of the picture is about 150m away. I walked it to check. You can start to make out the powerline in the distance too. This is probably 400m away.

So Penny has to go in next week for a tweak of the front Air Locker springs, so I have decided it is time for a little more POWER!
3" exhaust plus Steinbauer chip booked for next Tuesday! Just in time for the Springs trip. Next is to source a top quality canvas canopy builder who can build me the frame and canvas for the canopy I want.

Mate, open to all suggestions! I really want it to be solid roof so I can use it for carrying stuff if required, mesh sides with gull wing doors and covered in canvas. This way it is still light yet lockable so when we pull up in the carpark etc everything is secure. I love the look of the canvas but I don't want it a big square box, it has to angle inwards following the contour of the cab. It also needs to be easy to slide off if I want to pick up a load of gravel or whatever!

Not much I know!!!! Am about to begin the process of getting quotes, so if this is something your old man can do, PM me his details and I will drop in to get a quote.

This is about the closest I have found to what I want.

Ok so I picked up Penny this morning after having the 3" Sterling Exhaust and Steinbauer Performance chip installed yesterday! :D :D :D

The difference is noticeable straight away. Little louder, certainly deeper and throatier with a nice Turbo whistle as it spools up. The chip is awesome though!

Previously, the torque band was from 1800 rpm through to 2800rpm. You could feel the engine pulling right through this range however below or above this, it dropped off dramatically. Now, the torque band seems to have started earlier, around 1500rpm and she wants to pull hard right through to 3500rpm! I noticed that at 55kph at 1500rpm in 4th, when I used to have to drop back to 3rd slot, I can now just press the throttle and she starts pulling easily. I also tend to drive "by feel and sound" a bit, where I listen and feel the vehicle pulling and change gears as I feel the torque curve flatten off. I drove like that this morning and found I was changing up with the engine up at 3500rpm.

So much nicer to drive, with far less gear changes around town and much better throttle response. Can't wait to get her out on the highway this afternoon. The one thing that really used to tick me off was having to wait for a downhill straight to get out and pass anyone. Flat without a run up or uphill, just forget it, never gonna happen. SHould make highway driving so much more enjoyable and safer.

A larger exhaust will make you lose power at lower revs and develop more power at higher revs, that could be what you are experiencing rwnslux.

i found it was the opposite. it would gain more down low so the transition into boost didnt feel as apparent but lost up top.

DPchip/tunit chips stop working at 2800rpm on 1kz with standard ecu

Thanks! The chip manufacturer's will tell you it doesn't put any extra stress on the engine and in fact there was a big thread on here recently discussing that very question. My opinion, it must. If only a little. Although I also think that it some respects it is BETTER for the engine. How many times could you hear the engine struggling to pull away up a hill or get away from the lights? And to get moving you hold 1st a little longer than you should or drop it back a slot to get the revs to jump up. Those kind of things can't be good for it standard either.
I had a good long chat with my mechanic who regularly services my vehicle and has done quite a lot of work to it and I trust, about the engine and my concerns of installing a chip on an old engine (mine's done 255k). He was very happy with the condition of the engine, so I went ahead with it.

Price wise? You can get a Steinbauer chip for the '03 Hilux Diesel direct from Steinbauer for around the $1400 mark. My mechanic charged a little more than that to supply and install but knocked some off because I got the exhaust done at the same time and I'm a good customer! :D
