My 2004 Hilux

Postby Gatti on Mon, 25 Jul 2011 5:04 +0000

Hi Everyone,

I am new to this Forum, and am picking up my Hilux this Saturday!

I am going from this

To this

I have two young kids, and they are at an age now where we are getting into camping, so the Clubsport is useless for that.

The Hilux is a non turbo Diesel, and it has 180,000k's on it. Are there any tips to what I should do to it first?

They are fitiing some larger Sunraysia rims and All Terrain tyres before I pick it up.

Fit a turbo :P.

Will be a massive difference coming from that tyre fryer.

I would recommend Rocksliders? or a snorkel. Depends on what sort of terrain you will come across

Bloke at work has a 2.8 and his goes camping but rarely clicks 4WD.
For the tailgaters, If you think im going slow now. Wait till i hit my low gears

What you do first is the easy part, but where to stop now that's what brings us unstuck  it really depends what you wanna do mate if it's just camping and a bit of 4 wheelin with the kids then a good set of all terrains or muddies a 2 inch lift kit n a snorkel will see you some very happy days out on the trails... Congratulations on the purchase by the way :) :)
Cheers Kirk

I know how that goes, I learnt that lesson with my Clubsport.

It will be getting fitted with bigger rims and all terrain tyres before I pick it up.

I am looking forward to learning how to be a good 4wd driver, and getting out of Sydney more often :)

My 2004 Hilux

Postby KTM525EXC on Mon, 25 Jul 2011 7:34 +0000

Congrats on the new lux purchase mate :D as for mods you already have the bbar and rear step/ towbar I'd say next would be a 2" or so lift some good rubber under her and a snorkel.
That should see you out for a bit. From there I'd say go out and put the lux through it's paces and see what kind of terrain you will encounter and what suits you and if any additional mods are required eg winch, sliders, lockers ect.....

Well all i can say for becoming a good 4WDer is get out there often, go with people and learn and see how they do it

Everyone drives differently (Sorta) Ive come into the game young so i see how the older blokes do it and try use their idea's and advice. Ive tried my own idea's and some times i ended up needing a pull to get out

I go to Mt walker (Lidsdale) Lithgow a lot. I think that would be a great place to start wheeling, youve got different terrain and tracks that will test you and the Lux. Not much of a video but this is what happens when i try my idea haha (I was caught in a ditch and needed to get pulled out. Failed recovery as you can see me get disappointed)

Well done on the purchase mate.

Like all have said, protection, tyres, Lift, snorkel would be the tips but most of get out and enjoy it with the family.

Nice clean base to start from... I remember when mine was nice and shiny like that.

I would just get out and use it and you'll soon work out what is needed, you'll also have the benefit of your experience level increasing as the need for mods increase... best way to learn IMO

I am thinking I might take it to Boat Harbour on Sunday, as my kids are telling their mates that dads getting a car that we can drive on sand! :)

Can you still drive on the beach there at this time of year?

nice platform to start from mate! if you don't want to go to extreme with all the mods, like all the others have said is just some lift and protection, from there you can get some more experience behind the wheel and start honing to what accessories suit you...

all the best on the tracks :P

hey mate further more to the mods the boys have suggested. Id advise if youre getting into camping possibly a duel battery so u can run a fridge and camp lights etc without fear of el dead battery. then for ease of use Id say some draws in the back with a fridge slide. to keep all the gear organised. good luck with the purchase

My kids have been wanting to take the Hilux on the beach since I bought it, so I took them to Kurnell on the weekend. They loved it, especially when I drove it in the water!

I am heading to a mates place at Anna Bay in a couple of weeks, so I'll be able to have a go on the dunes at Stockton :)

Thanks mate. I gave it a going over with the pressure cleaner when I got home.

The non turbo is a little slow compared to my last car

I have been thinking about a turbo kit for it
