Moshwithabike's LN106 Build

Postby Moshwithabike on Tue, 01 May 2018 5:23 +0000

What started out as a simple task to buy an hilux to go camping escalated. After close to 6 months of searching i found a one owner ln106 with 149k on the clock. Full log bulk servicing with toyota belts and a rusted out tray. A deal not to be missed.

After my grandfather took me camping in his lux as a kid i had to have one. Plans were for a camp/all rounder rig.. im a boilermaker by trade and build boats. So ive done everything myself with the guidence of a friend that has done everything to his with leafs as possible and has now gone coils.

Enjoy.

I first built an ally snorkel and airbox for something different and to challange myself. Then my mate wanted a cheap tray so i sold him mine along with my dogcage. So the rush was on to build a new one. Also did diff push, 33's, IFS rears with Buds shackles at about same time.

In the mean time i sourced bits for hi steer conversion.

With the tray i wanted something different. So i wanted to go with an aluminium deck for same some weight and not to rust haha. So i went 5083 Marine grade ally in one piece. Made the tray to 2100L and 1800W.

I paint boats and things at our work so i thought why not paint the cab and tray at the same time in marine paint because its hardy. Am quite happy and how its held up.

Thanks guys. Yeah for sure. Always down to help where i can.

So i gathered parts for my hi steer conversion. These included.

- Diff rebuild kit from LowRangeOffroad w/ marlin crawler axle seals and backing plate eliminators.
- Buds Customs hub adaptor for IFS hubswap/Wide track
- Buds Customs 1.5" dropped hanger.
- IFS hubs, new wheel studs and locking hub studs.
- Built Myself a diff truss.
- LowRangeOffroad shock towers and steering arms off a mate.
- Dropped pitman arm from LowRangeOffroad.
- My mate fabbed me some chromolly steering links with FJ80 tierods
- 12" Ranchos.
- Toyota Surf Steering box and steering shaft.
- Made my own fishplates and crush tubes.
- My old rear springs with a leaf taken out.
- Banana Shackles.

I first jacked the car up and ripped my front diff out and rebuild that first. I left my center in as it was still good. I fully stripped the diff and welded my truss on and painted it up. Then rebuild the swivels. Attached the buds adaptors to the IFS hubs and bolted my arms and every back together.

Than i cut my old spring hanger off. Threw in the old rears and lined the dropped member up and welded it in place. To do this i took out the radiator, Cut of the old torque arm mount and unbolted my old steering boxs which was most probably the hardest part haha. steering box lines were so tight i had to put vice grips on there to crack it. While everything was still out i lined up the new IFS steering box and fishplates.

Then fabbed some fishplates for the shock towers and sung them on.
Image

Pretty much lined the steering box up as far fwd as possible and tryed to get the best angle to help with bump steer and so i didn/t hit the spring on the pitman arm also. Took a bit of mucking around but got there, seeing as this was my first time.
Image
First test in the drain across from my house. Now the narrower rear end binds when wheel hits the chassis. So next mod is IFs rear diff and inversion bar!~

Slowly gathered more parts for IFS rear conversion. and built a shed in the mean time haha. Helped my mate with his hi steer conversion too. And then we both did the rears at the same time.

Parts included.
- IFS rear diff 98+
- IFS hilux rear brake drums
- IFS hilux handbrake cable.
- Fabbed myself inversion bar and laser cut shock tabs.
- 12" Ranchos which could have been 10"s but i had a set of 12s off a mate.
- New rear wheel bearings
- My mates rear wheel bearing tool he fabbed.
- LIttle fishplates

My mate and i did ours both at the same time, was a little quicker too. I stripped my old diff out and unbolted my center. I cleaned the new axles up, Unpressed my backing plates off the Ln106 axles and pressed new bearings and backing plates onto the IFS rear diff. I then sat the diff in with a ubolt flip kit and lined up where my shock tabs where going to be and leveled where the fishplates and inversion bar was going to go. I tacked the inversion bar in place..

I then bolted my shock tabs onto my shocks and placed them where i could get the right amount of uptravel. then pulled it all off and welded it together. painted it. then reassembled.
I would have liked less angle on the shocks but trying to fit 12s was alittle hard. if i ever go 10s next ill just move the tabs.
Image

Best mods that are worthwhile for sure. Fabbed up a quick RHS tailshaft to get me by for now, no binding. So then we took the luxs camping. Exact same mods and wheel setups too they handle like a dream, so soft for a leaf setup. I love it. Some pics. Enjoy. Also a sneaky number plate upgrade when the new platem8 deals/combos came out.

Just built some rock sliders aswell.
Cape trip planned for this year. Then ill save up for some lockers and dual transfers.

Awesome build dude, thanks for showing the progress.
Looks so much fun, makes me wish I still had my old Lux compared to my N80!

Great build along there, really like the tray and light setup, and looking to redo mine similarly. Very impressed with your snorkel and airbox, how is the induction roar and did you go a diferent type of air filter?

In prep for the trip i installed my dual battery system. Redarc bcdc2540 and a 130ah agm battery, under my dog cage in a fully sealed box with a vent.
ImageUntitled by Massingham, on Flickr

Also fabbed a quick canopy with canvas sides and ally back with spare tyre mount. Ill add a jerry. An holder next to it later on.

Also threw a 4wd supacenter winch on and made my own winch cradle to put behind my ally bull bar. And notched my sump for my hi steer links to clear as on full uptravel they were dinting the sump.

Cheers mate. It has box section welded around the box then the box section was welded to the tray floor to spread the load and act as a lip for the lis to screw into. Being aluminium i had to beef it up so it didnt crack. All 4mm plate. Handled the dirt roads and bull dust holes good.

Recently did my turbo conversion finally, then did a test trip from Cairns to Moreton Island. I fabricated my own manifold to suit the TD04 rex turbo. went an ebay front mount cooler, and 3" stainless exhaust.

Overall happy as. Made 80hp at 10psi on stock pump and injectors with good AFRs on dyno. Ill get a JH hilux compensated pump and injectors soon down the track.

Cheers

Geez mate what a fabulous build, looks like you know your stuff. All that fabrication looks like you made the unbreakable into the unstoppable
Congratulations mate, keep up the great work, bet this little project will keep on keeping on :D
Cheers Gipsy :D although I'm sure somebody will challenge that  even Einstein wasn't certain of his theories.
