Question from a new member

Postby dannyo on Thu, 12 Mar 2009 5:10 +0000

Hi guys I am currently looking to replace my 2000 prado diesel with a new or near new hilux 3.0 l dual cab. Firstly I looked at a new unit at my local dealer but I noticed that they do not have free wheeling hubs as my old hilux had. My old sr5 had a button on the shift that locked the hubs but on this car It didnt seem to have that button. When I asked the sales idiot he didnt know how to lock the hubs either. .

Secondly what are the manuals like to tow with as my boat weighs in at about 1500kgs on a bogie trailer.

Thirdly what is the approximate distance on a full tank of fuel on the highway not towing.

Just a bit of help would be greatfully accepted.

Dannyo,

The SR5 has an auto disconnecting diff - ADD, it electrically engages or disengages the operation of the diff when switching between 2wd and 4wd. No locking hubs fitted or required. The SR has no ADD or locking hubs fitted.

Haven't towed anything huge with mine so can't comment on that.

As for fuel consumption I get around 10lt/100k on the highway, sometimes as low as 9.5 sometimes as high as 11 depending on wind and speed etc. 10lt/100k means I get about 650-680 k safely out of a tank and have I have never put more than 69 litres in the tank that holds 76 apparently.

Good luck with it.

Hey Dannyo,
I do alot of highway driving and can get 700k's out of a tank, once i even managed to do 750 but that was really pushing my luck!
I tow a boat that weighs about the same and it tows it well. Went fishing with some mates who had a 4.2 turbo cruiser with a boat that weighed about the same and he couldn't keep up, I was suprised.

Dannyo,

My diesel manual Hilux tows really well. First gear is a bit tall, but once moving it pulls well. I regularly tow a tandem trailer loaded up, and occasionally tow a caravan (about 1300kg loaded). My fuel economy drops by about 2litres per 100km from 11l/100km to 13l/100km.

The ADD mentioned by Batman isn't fitted to my SR, so my front driveshafts, diff and front prop shaft all spin regardless of whether I'm in 4wd or not. Not ideal for economy; ADD should be an option on the SR model I reckon.

No I havent considered the v6 as I did own a 4cyl petrol hilux a few years back but I found off road it was very thirsty. Plus my last 2 4x4s have been diesel & both toyotas, 2.8 hilux & 3.0l prado I have been very happy with both but it is something I will compare & evaluate eg; running costs , purchase price , resale values. What type of fuel figures are you getting?

thanks Danny

Average for petrol seems to be about 13-14/100k's. To start off with the Petrol model is $2000 cheaper and require less service then diesel. Toyota recommends 10,000 intervals for both, but I wouldnt let it go passed 5000's with the diesel. So theres another $200 per 5000ks.

Ive just ordered a TRD as my last V6 wasnt too bad on fuel. When you really look at it, fuel costs are minor when you buy a 50k+ car.

You got depressiation, maintainence, insure etc etc.

Then with the diesel, if you want more performance your looking at another $2500+ to exhaust and chip it, and thats alot of petrol as well.

Then, in some states, petrol is 20c/L cheaper then diesel....
And, the commonrail diesels are a pain in the ass, you got to be very careful with
the diesel you put in them as they are very fussy.

Something for you to think about...
