Upgrading 08 hilux

Upgrading 08 hilux

Postby Dazza_211 on Sat, 03 Apr 2021 7:42 +0000

Hey so I have a few questions regarding my 08 hilux, im new to this forum and haven't asked anything prior, I have searched but no help on how to go about checking and improving my boost, I have blown up the 08 motor kun26r 3.0 D4D, and have had it swapped for a 10 motor 3.0 D4D with new injectors, I plan on putting a scan gauge tool to monitor my engine temp and coolant temps so I dont cook this motor, but I want the best performance and economy out of her, It has a 3 inch lift steel tray all terrains and I was wondering if a dp chip or similar is worth the money, ive heard mixed reviews. Give me a hand making this the ute of my dreams please.

It might be worth getting a 3" exhaust for a start, it will boost your turbo by removing any restriction. That's the first thing to try, then if you feel the need, consider an ecu tune instead of the chip. There's not much price difference and the tune will do much more than an add-on chip. The exhaust will help no matter what else you do.
It's worth looking at a Bluetooth OBD2 scanner because it's able to be used with your mobile phone and gives you real-time readings of temp, boost and heaps of other stuff right there on your phone.

Do you know why the old motor blew?

Yes, a larger exhaust will give you lower EGTs but these engines are reliable when serviced and not driven with respect. If you are doing heavy work, it might be worth getting an EGT probe or OBDII scanguage or that you can set a temp alarm on. But it would be good to know how the old engine blew? The usual suspects are a cracked piston or ceased engine, both of which are related. This would help us provide our best opinions on what you can do.
I might be wrong.

Hey I did forget to mention it has a 3" exhaust. I've been looking into pyro or EGT probes as I've found they are more reliable than scan tools for update and fluctuations, i do plan on getting a scan tool for the lesser items like coolant temps and oil pressures.

it had a tune program to the new motor but due to the newer motor and going through the diagnostics to change the injectors it is back to standard, I believe It let a piston go and plan on rebuilding the old motor so next time I can swap them again and just keep rotating them if I when it happens again not that I plan on breaking this one, the old motor had 370k on it, with no added monitoring, I only had it for maybe 40k worth of driving so no telling how it was driven prior to.

Well 370k is a fair life so it was probably due, but most likely the maintenance was not up to scratch on the old one. What makes you think that the tune is no longer there? Toyota may have returned it to stock if they had a play with it. Who did the injectors?
A pyro probe is the only way to see exhaust temps, scangauge won't do it.

the mechanics called me saying it had a tune and to diagnose why black smoke was coming out they restored it to standard and then they had to get new injectors to fix the original issue, now I would have to get it retuned as they couldn't save the data from the original tune, and is a pyro or EGT better?

Pyro in the dump pipe is the ONLY way to keep an eye on egt.
Who did the standard tune and injectors? The tune data is normally a data file which is uploaded to the ECU and the best way to retune is on a dyno to get the best out of your individual motor. I assume you replaced the engine and the ecu from the donor car and the original ecu is no longer fitted?

A local mechanic shop fitted motor only then replaced the injectors aswell as dump in the new data file, I had no idea it was previously tuned and the mechanics have a dyno aswell but I will take it to a specialist in Tamworth for tuning, I will be getting my old motor back very soon but it is motor only with the ecu still in the lux
