Hi all,

Long time reader, first time poster. Bought my '06 SR5 Hilux in December 2019. It's the 4.0L V6. Previous owner has taken great care of it and done some great mods. Honestly, there's not too many other things I'd need (though I can always dream about that supercharger!). Was able to get out for a few trips in the hills around Nowra before all the fires and then the corona lock downs. Now I'm just online shopping and doing some pretty basic interior mods to make the vehicle mine.

Thanks to everyone who has contributed to this forum! I've found some great ideas on here. I've already done the back seat mod and looking for other easy things to do while in lock-down (I can turn a wrench, but I'm no mechanic). Might start a build page to keep track of what I get up to. Look forward to reading about everyone else's lock-down projects!

Cool place to own a Hilux down Nowra. I grew up there and still close enough to explore the trails on weekends. Enjoy!

Thanks Hiluxxury! I've been making a lot of use of the search function. Amazed at how much knowledge there is on this forum.

CB23, I'm actually a little south of Nowra in the Jervis Bay area. Fantastic place to live. There's some great stuff to explore south of Yalwal as well. Can't wait for this lock down to end!

I lived in Jervis Bay Village for a couple of years while my then partner worked for the park. I know Yalwal and around rather well and a few times made Monkey Gum part of my commute between JB and CBR. It's a great park of the world.

Certainly is plenty to explore and I think everyone agrees re lock down, 4x4 and dirt bikes are my mental health relief so I hope we eradicate C19 and get let out of home soon!

If you are comfortable with tools a front brake upgrade is a good idea on pre 2012 V6 4x4.

Either use 2011-15 dual cab 4x4 diesel (2012-15 V6) which are about 319mm diameter (yours will be 297mm).

Or use 120 series ‘cruiser (Prado) which are 338mm which is what the 08-09 TRD Hilux had.

You need 17” rims with the Landcruiser rotors.

Either are a straight bolt on, new rotors and calipers are readily available. You just need the backing plates off a donor vehicle, not sure if either size are available new or not.

The hardest part of the job is you need a big brass drift to knock the shafts out of the centres of the front hubs, so you can unbolt the hubs and switch the backing plates out. While the hubs are off they are also easier to clean surface rust off so the new rotor sits square. Then just bolt all back together and bleed the brakes.

Either size will work OK as the biggest tyres you can fit to a 2006 are 265/65/17 (or equivalent) and this was the standard size tyre on Hilux with the 319mm rotor. The bigger rotors are better again, just have to get wheels off 120 series, 2011 SR5 diesel 4x4, 2012-15 or 2008-9 TRD, or aftermarket in same size. Speedy make replica 120 series. Others will fit too.

The only negative about the 338mm rotors is the pedal is a bit softer than you are used to with the small rotors. I later upgraded my booster to a modified VT Commodore one to alleviate this a fair bit. However the TRD was like it standard, same master cyl with the 338mm rotors.

That's great Hiluxury! I'll have to try talking my partner into letting me make monkeygum part of the Canberra commute. Although, I only made it part way up last time. It was the first time I'd tried the hilux in 4x4 and I chickened out when I saw some big rocks ahead. I'm sure the vehicle is capable, I was just on my own though, so didn't want to push it. Cool that your partner used to work for Boodaree. Would love to get a job there.

CB23, totally understand your frustration. I think mental health activities have been somewhat overlooked in all of this. I honestly don't see the harm in going for a day trip in the forby, as long as you're not interacting with anyone else and you stay reasonably local. But then I guess there are too many people that would push the limits or bend the rules.

HK1837, That sounds like a great project. Thanks! I've been talking to my partner about how I'm not completely happy with the braking performance. And the rear disc conversion is a bit out of my budget. I'll have a hunt around and see if I can source the parts.

The front brake upgrade and new wheel cylinders on the rear will make a difference. It is simple physics too that if you increase tyre diameter over standard your braking performance suffers by the same %. So going up in rotor diameter fixes this.

Martyhing, a good beginning for the Canberra trip is drive down to wandandian and take a right at wandean road, takes you up the hills to tianjara falls and beyond on the Braidwood road. Great wandering around the escarpment and along fire trails to devil's pinch and back to Milton via the water reservoir (porter's creek dam). Don't forget tianjara falls! There is a military map around there which shows all the firetrail network and the airstrip.

Thanks again HK1837. Great advice. I had a bit of a look at some forum posts on front disc upgrades. Looks like I need 16" wheels for the 319mm disc and 17" for the 338mm (as you previously posted). Unfortunately, i only have 15" rims, so this mod is going to have to wait for a bit. I'll probably look at upsizing when it comes time to replace the tyres.

Gipsy, Wandean road is a regular route of mine. Some great tracks coming off it too. Last time I checked, the road linking Braidwood rd to Porter's Creek was closed. I am really keen to do that track though. You wouldn't happen to know where I could find that military map do you?

The porter's creek road is hard to find because it's not used much. It is over a solid rock trail like the bed of a creek. If you can get the military map it is shown as a track but very difficult to get the right trail. See if devil's pinch is there. If you get there you can go through to porter's creek and Milton. Maybe it was closed during the fires? Try from the other end, from Milton.
I got my map whilst in the military but I think any specialist map shop should have it. It may be available through the local RFS station. Google maps shows it as Mount bushwalker road I think. Or tianjara firetrail. From sanctuary point follow the highway towards Milton take a right at Princes Highway and pointers road then Grayson's pointer Rd to porter's creek road. It's very difficult and may have closed during the fires.

Another old spot worth checking is a great camping spot, left turn off the Clyde mountain road about half way up and goes down a valley to the creek. Can't remember the name but it's there if you look for it. Misty mountain road??

I'll have to go looking for that camping spot Gipsy, Sounds beautiful. We just did a drive up clyde ridge rd before we got locked down. Beautiful area. I'd love to explore that some more. I have the topo map for the areas up behind milton and out to Tianjara so I'll take a look at those. My partner and I went out and walked Mt Bushwalker before the fires and the road was closed at the junction where I assume you'd turn right to get to the area you're talking about (left to mt bushwalker). I'd love to see it opened as it'd be great to do that loop up to braidwood road and then back down Cassia or Wandean.

If you have a topographic map it will show a ridge where East and west escarpment comes in tight... That's devil's pinch. Not many know but 55 years ago c130 Hercules and Caribou landed on that airstrip at tianjara as well as my uh1b Iroquois operated from there training for Vietnam. If you go to the naval air museum at albatross I turned a spanner or two on almost every aircraft you see there. The last was 880, the Douglas A4g Skyhawk trainer with a double cockpit, one of the last remaining twin cockpit trainers, the one next to it 882 is a ring-in because 882 crashed and the one there is from the US and painted up in my squadron colours and number. Check out the Pratt and Whitney j52 engine next to them, that's a great powerplant! The fairy gannet and Firefly are also great memories for me as I cut my teeth on the Rolls Royce Merlin V12 supercharged engines, building them at Hawker de Haviland in Lidcombe, Sydney. Always worked on anything that went fast and made them go faster! I once left two black stripes on Kinghorn st from junction st to worrigee st in my race-prepared 400hp 1962 dodge Phoenix 5.2ltr V8 in my miss-spent youth :D Then the first 230hp 'Shaker' Ford Falcon GT HO made it redundant :( https://www.tradeuniquecars.com.au/feat ... nix-review
The Iroquois on a pole at the Nowra bridge is one of mine, went into the sea off Vincentia if memory serves me, i was involved in the recovery from 30 Meters of seawater.

Wow! some great local history there Gipsy. Thanks heaps for that. I spent a bit of time in the museum myself doing an aeroskills course in school many years ago. I remember when that skyhawk crashed. a real tragedy for the local community. I never heard about the Iroquois ditching in the bay. Would have been a big recovery job. great work!

Thanks mate, just a few years in the JB area for me and my family, well almost half my life! There were several Skyhawks crashed in the area with great loss of a few of my close friends, one into the range at Beecroft and another into the sea off point perpendicular. Another off my old ship HMAS Melbourne in the south China sea when the catapult failed, pilot survived after going under the ship and extracting himself after the ship went over him. My mum and dad's ashes are there in the bay off Hyams beach, my dad was scattered there from an Iroquois after he served 40 years in the Navy. The Iroquois into JB was one of a few that crashed which I recovered and some rebuilt. Hyams Beach was my first taste of Oz when we lived in one of the cottages which are now just a memory, they fell into the creek that flows through Hyams to the beach opposite the shop. I was 2years old then. Followed my dad into the force with no regrets. Not many know that the Iroquois squadron from 723 sqn served in Vietnam with the yanks as EMU deployment of HFV (helicopter flight Vietnam). Dad ran 723 sqn then the engineering department on the Vung tau Ferry (HMAS Sydney) for many trips up there.
Also not many know that the Skyhawks and trackers were offloaded from HMAS Melbourne by barge in JB off Creswell, by truck to albatross, another experience for me :D

I think you meant 330hp GT-HO Gipsy! The “shaker”, the XY GT-HO was about 330 real horsepower as a standard, off the lot car which when you add the car’s weight, 0-100mph and 1/4 mile times works out just about perfectly. After the V8 XU1 was cancelled the XT GT-HO became and remained the benchmark standard car for all of the carbureted Australian era. Apart from its two GT-HO predecessors (again standard ones) only the HT-HG GTS350 manual as a standard car (3.36 rear axle) and VK Group A came close to its 1/4 mile and 0-100mph capabilities. You are one of the lucky few who got to try one by the sounds!

Thanks for the corrected info hk, but the point remains, my dodge Phoenix became redundant. For interest sake, my dodge initially was used to tow the earlier gtho to Bathurst and the other racers gigged it as a yank tank until it was put over Mount panorama against the first gtho and came out on top  Tortion bar front suspension and low centre of gravity plus dragmag wheels against the homologated gtho ;) and a race bred hemi Mopar! And I thought you were a dodge ram man!

"Based on the first B-body US Dart, the 1962 Phoenix was effectively a giant Valiant A-body which left it much lighter and seriously quick with the 5.2-litre V8. Its wide track and low centre of gravity dictated by US police requirements earned it a global reputation as one of the best handling cars to come out of the US."
"Most Australians had no concept of the wild hemi V8 Dodge performance models that Americans enjoyed during this era."

For interest sake, my Phoenix gave way to a HG Premier 308 due to a growing family commitment and rising racecar costs! The I turned to racing boats, like a 15' carbon fibre bullet with an xs150 short shaft Mercury engine... 100mph on water is VERY SCARY!

Link was good, haven't fully read it yet though as I am on my phone.

I'm a Muscle Car fan, mostly the only two real Holden Muscle Cars (which you should know by my usename!) the HK GTS327 and the HT/HG GTS350 manual. But I also respect the other offereings too.

Which car was yours in 1969? Those XW GT-HO's in 1969 were very quick cars. I don't think they were ever really going to beat Harry Firth's HDT cars especially given the lap miscount for the West/Brock car (poor old Des, two years in a row he did one more lap than the rest of the field while others were shown the chequered flag!). Everyone raves about how quick the Cleveland pwered GT-HO's were, but when you look at the lap times of 1969 and 1970 the GT-HO (with 351 Windsor) in 1969 was faster per lap, and the 1969 race was completed quicker than the 1970 race (351 Cleveland) despite the big stack on the first lap in 1969 that slowed the whole thing down.

I always laugh when a blue eyed fan tells me the PhaseIII was the "fastest 4 door sedan in the world". When you point them to the actual quote from one of the local journos: "On a dollar for dollar basis it is probably the best performing four-door car in the world...." source Evan Green, SMH 22/8/71. They conveniently ignore cars like the Mercedes 300SEL 6.3 and other 60's US stuff like 421 Pontiac Super Duty and the crown of them all the 1966 Coronet sedans fitted with 426 street Hemis. Any of these in sedan form are faster.

BTW, even though I'm a GM fan and love my GM engines like L79 327, LT1 350, L88 and ZL1 427 etc, you cannot go past a 426 Hemi. Even the local early E55 Charger with the "old stock" 1969 high comp 340ci engines were a wolf in sheep's clothing with their single exhauts and auto transmissions. Not to mention their sweet 265 Weber fed screamers. i should have bought one of them when I had the chance!
