Gday

Thanks for the add. Have a $30000 budget
Which model / year would be best for this set or conversion
4door, aluminium canopy, roof top tent.

Appreciate any points or ideas. As I have never owned a hilux before

You’ll find some really cheap cars over the next few months. Some really cheap Tritons around as new cars too.
I’d hold onto the money for now unless you really want to spend it. If you find a good used one you may not only get a bargain but make someone’s day who is desperate to sell, even a dealer desperate to pay wages. Might be a win, sort of win.

Last of the 1kd powered Hilux will be your best bet. HK1837 will say get the V6 - there are lots of good reasons for that engine as well.

If you are setting up from scratch you can easily spend 15-30k plus fitting it out. Decent Alloy canopies are around $15k before you add a rooftop tent and batteries etc.

Find something already built will be your best bet for the budget.

A 2015 as suggested above would be my suggestion. Better brakes, higher towing and GVW by 250kg.

For around town and highway driving and towing I’d say get a V6 but for around Australia touring and outback a diesel would be better. If you get an auto get it’s transmission fluid checked before buying, better still get the pan taken off and inspected. If all OK and you buy it get a big cooler fitted and new synthetic fluid put in it.

Problem is looking at Carsales $30k you get a manual SR with 150,000km on it. Meaning you might be buying someone else’s problems. But as I said you might snag a bargain in the next few months where someone is offloading their touring toy with nothing wrong with it.

Whilst I agree an aluminium canopy would be ideal, maybe consider a tray and canopy option as it should be cheaper, which will give you more cash to put into a more mechanically reliable vehicle. We have travelled extensively in our 2013 Diesel Hilux with the standard canopy and an ARB Simpson III roof-top tent; although I would still love a custom built stainless canopy I can't justify the cost given that the standard set-up with pop-up windows and a bit of basic cabinetry inside continues to do the job.

I'd personally recommend a diesel and manual transmission to keep it simple.

One big advantage of the Hilux is that no matter how remote you are there is usually parts available and someone who knows how to work on a Hilux.

Before you look at other options investigate bent chassis's, noting that a lot of issues relate more to people overloading the rear, not letting down their tyres or driving to the conditions; there are some makes and models that appear more often in the lists of repeat offenders. It is a surprisingly common issue, in Western Australia particularly.

Yeah it’s such a weird price $30000 I feel like I’m stuck in the middle of the road.
