Wheel Upgrade for 4x2 SR5

Wheel Upgrade for 4x2 SR5

Postby MCQ4x2 on Wed, 03 Jul 2019 6:21 +0000

Hi all I'm new to the forum and to Hilux.

Bought a 2012 SR5 V6 for general light towing and carrying stuff about mainly.

Great forum and learnt a lot so far from searching..

My question is about the 15 alloys on the SR5 are they upgradable to 17s from a 4x4 model or later models?? As it rides lower than 4x4 will they fit?

Sorry for a newbie question but I can't find much here on the humble 4x2s

Thank you for any help and advice..

Find some original Falcon Ute rims of the right size and offset, just watch your offset as I think on a 4x2 you are limited to a 12.5mm offset change. You may need the load rating of the Falcon Ute rims. Just look at the maximum rear axle loading and divide by 2 for the minimum wheel rating. PCD is 5 x 4.5” but also check the centre bore size. Be careful some XR6 rims as some are far lower load carrying than others.

Bought a set of Rav4 wheels with good tread, and bolted them straight on. The load index is slightly lower, so also bought a rav4 tyre placard and stuck that on. (Also same centre bore using Rav/Kluger wheels)
Speedo now reads 100/100 according to Satnav.
235/65R17 tyres on either the steel or alloys. Your alloys should have the same wheel nut, for any other Toyota alloy, but will need different nuts for the steel wheel, if you go that way. PM me for pics, if you're interested.

Whichever wheels you choose, remember that the nuts need to suit the wheel, but the threads need to suit the vehicle.
I see a lot of ford alloys on Lolux's, using the standard wheel nut, but dependent on which ford wheel is used, the nuts may only be held on by 2 or 3 turns of thread, which is outside requirement.

Hey guys, can I just double check the centre bore size of the 4x2 Hilux?

I've just got 2 questions:

1.

I've heard that it's 106.1mm but the Kluger/Rav wheels centre bore is 60.1mm. Yet, everyone says the kluger/rav wheels will bolt straight onto the hilux?

How's this possible? :o

2.

My stock wheels are the steelies in 205/70R15 with 106S tyres. The placard says: "The sum of the load carrying capacities of the tyres fitted to any axle or axle group of this vehicle shall not be less than the relevant load shown above". The load shown above shows: 1200kg front axle and 1550kg rear axle.

The wheels I want to fit have a rating of 100W - the 100 means a load rating of 800kg, therefore 1600kg load capacity per axle. That would still mean it's legal right, even though it's less than the factory 106 rated tyres?

Any help would be greatly appreciated! :)

Pretty sure you are right on the loading. 100 is 800kg, W is 270km/h. The 106 tyres will be light truck tyres, the 100's will be off a SUV capable of high speeds, and won't handle load or towing as well as the 106's. Just check the tyre rating isn't also quoted on the placard, not just the rear axle max load.

Measure the bore on your wheels, just take one off and measure it.

Toyota 2WD are 5 stud. 5 on 114.3, with a 60.1mm centrebore.
4WD's are 6 stud with a 110(ish)mm bore.

If you 2WD has 6 stud wheels, it ain't a Hilux.
Or it's a really weird Hilux.

Tyre placards: your tyre placard must have details relevent to the tyres you have fitted.
If the placard says 106S, but the tyres you FIT are 100W's, you are outside legal.

Your placard must be changed to one that reads a max of 100, or you must fit wheels that have a rating of 106 or greater.

It is common for Lolux owners to fit the 17's 18's or 19's and not change the placard.

but legally, dependent on state laws, you can only increase rim diameter by 2 inches, and tyre diameter by 2 inches.
Hiluxs had 15" so you can go 16" or 17", and up to about 225/70R17, which is about 2" above original.

Ahh right, that makes sense. The wheel thing online said the 2WD hilux had a 106.1mm centre bore which sounded strange, so it's just the 4x4 hiluxs which have this?

My placard doesn't specify a specific load rating for tyres. It just says as above "1200kg front axle and 1550kg rear axle" and that tyres can't be fitted if they are below this load. The car comes stock with 106 tyres but 100 tyres still meet the requirements of the placard (1600kg per axle max) so I assume they're fine.

Do wheels have a load rating on them as well? If so, where's it found - is it just stamped on the back? I'll have to check that out to make sure it's rated for the load as well.

Here's my placard: https://i.imgur.com/DluL8aH.png for reference. I don't think it specifies a tyre rating, just the load rating?

Yes, wheels are load rated. Either the manufacturer puts it in advertising, sometimes stamps it into the rims or you get them off a car/ute with the same or higher axle load as yours. This is why I said you may need Falcon ute rims. Most sedan rims are less than 800kg.
