580,000km petrol hilux maintenance schedule?

Postby lukehiluxau on Tue, 01 Mar 2022 8:25 +0000

Bought a 580,000km petrol auto 2004 hilux. It seems to run great right now. But just wondering what the maintenance schedule should be for this to encourage longevity (as much as possible!)

Should I go off noises, or is there a way to be proactive here? Like the timing chain for example. Do they ever go?

Luke, with that many kilometres on the clock you would never know what has been done to it but if it got to those kilometres it's likely to have been serviced ok. All you need to do, I would recommend change all oil and filters from engine and drivetrain and you should be good to go. Unless you can find out when the recent service history has been done it's just a matter of keeping it going with regular servicing. If anything is likely to happen, you will get indications of issues as you go. If it's not using engine oil I would expect the engine has been overhauled or replaced by now.

Which engine? 2.7 4cyl or 4.0 v6

There is so much you can do for peace of mind but it can end up as a money pit.

The 5VZ-FE has a timing belt. If unknown when it was last changed, change it. There is some info on the prado forums and some of the US forums as the engine was used in the tacoma and prado 90. See when/if they change out water pumps, valve timings, oil pumps, electronics - alternators etc etc

Refresh all the fluids and start from there. Filters too. From there just enjoy the vehicle and save your $$$ for when something does go wrong.
I might be wrong.

If it's a v6 they're virtually bullet proof and 580km is reasonable. Check oil consumption and otherwise, as hiluxxury said... Save your money for when something does happen, enjoy your Hilux. Refresh all fluids and filters and you're good to go. Keep an eye out for any fluid loss including the water pump area.
