Hey Folks,

I'm looking for a close-to-drop-in replacement for the wheels on my 2002 Hilux 4x4 (turbo, KZN165). Currently fitted with 205R16 tires on 16x5.5F SDC rims (~ +30mm offset, PDC 6x139.7). Overall diameter of tyre ~ 709 mm or 29 inches.

I'd like to replace them with standard steel rims.
Almost all the driving I do these days is on road.

The claim is that this will make tyre replacement cheaper and give me a wider range of models to choose from...

I'm having trouble getting my head around what would be a suitable rim and tyre replacement size that...

1) keeps a similar offset (+30)

2) keeps a similar overall size so I don' have to futz with the Speedo (29 inch or 709mm)

and 3) isn't so wide it requires flares (or interferes on the inside clearance) (currently 8 inches/205 mm)

I'm happy to move to a different sized rim (presumably 17 inch)


Can anyone advise on if I'm making a mistake and or if its a good idea, what combo of tires and rims would be sensible (in terms of availability and presumably cost)

Tanks for that, but that thread doesn't seem to address my actual question. - it's about 32-33 inch tyres and body lifts of around 2 inches - neither of which I am after.

At what point does a tyre get too old to use? and if one used it, what would the failure mode look like?

If it's 17 years old keep it as a spare and only use it for emergencies. Tyres grow hard when old and should by rights be replaced but as a spare not so bad for short distances. Some countries mandate replacing tyres at 6 or 7 years. If it was fitted on the car it would possibly be illegal. Check your local regulator, or tyre dealer, they can give you the actual regulations.

Back to your original question. Mine is a 2004 model, I have the split rims in the shed. I'm now running some 15" rims I got off e-bay for around $30 each (NEW) and I have 235 / 75 / 15 on them. Going through the exercise of finding affordable rubber 7 or 8 years ago, I found (at that time ... in NSW) that 15" rubber was cheaper than 16". 17" was a whole new ball game, I was gonna have to win lotto for them.
As for your spare, if you change rim size you'll have to get a 5th rim for the spare so the 17 years may even grow for the next owner of the vehicle?

7x16 Prado rims and 225/75/16 tyres would meet all your requirements. Mine were just covered by the guards on my KZN 165 without flares. IIRC TOTAL tyre width was covered, not only the tread.

You can go 245/75/16, but the 225s will be better on the road and the 245s may not fit 100% under the guards.

These are examples of the Factory hilux 16 inch rims, tubeless, usually fitted with either a 205R16 or a 225/75R16.
Either size, on these rims, is exactly what you seem to be looking for. And there are heaps for sale, cheap.

Getting rare these days is a chrome version, looks very similar, that if you can find in good condition, would look nice. Note but that they are available in a "reversed" split rim as well, so make sure the rims is what you want.

Look for 5 wheels/tyres. Get rid of that pristine 17 yo spare. It'll let you down the one day when you REALLY need to be somewhere else.
