Hey guys, new to this site but have gained plenty of useful info here. I was tossing up between a LN167 or the KZN165 models of the post 01 hiluxes. I think im sold on the KZN (1KZ-TE engine) as most people i've spoken to said the non turbo is good but they wish they had more power. Whats the general consensus on the factory turbo? Is the non turbo more reliable? any info on what is better for what and why would be much appreciated.

Cheers

Its a good engine. They do have (rare) head cracking issues and its good to change the glow plugs every 100,000km. Oil changes and regular maintenance is essential for keeping it going in the long term.

I've had both as for vehicles in the past. If I remember correctly, the turbo is geared better for highway while the non-turbo was better off road. I kind of like how slow the non-turbo engine was... kept me out of trouble and still could do the hwy kms with ease.

Cheers!

Yeah i'm not strictly off the idea of the non-turbo, I don't mind going slow, think i'm going to have to test drive both to see what I prefer.

How was the non-turbo on sand ? any dunes/hills you couldnt get up?

Hey mate- owned a non turbo 1998 dual cab 3L & had a 1990 2.8L before that. I found them pretty good in sand (do a lot of beach fishing), hardly ever had to use low range- just let the tires down & they went pretty much anywhere i wanted to go. Towing my tinny was painful on the open road, particularly into a headwind- id go the turbo if you intended to do a lit of highway towing/driving- either way great cars!

One thing i have noticed with the 1kz is it is alot easier to work on then the 5l-e, oil res is up the front, filter has a oil catch tray and drain, just the little things!
