Engine conversion - commodore V6?

Postby Zakko on Thu, 12 Dec 2019 11:17 +0000

Hey all
I have a 1996 hilux 4x4 petrol (duel cab) and it would seem the engine has an expiry date in term of looking at a few grand work of engine repairs. The engines are pretty shitty so basically just trying to sus whether it's worth scrapping or looking into getting a new engine put in. I guess my options are a 2.8d engine in (plenty of pros and cons with that), or a commodore engine which I am less familiar with. The truck is in great condition otherwise other than leaking wheel bearings, and has done 230'000km.

My question is has anyone done this commodore conversion on the exact same.model and how much $$$ am I looking at? And pros and cons of diff types of commodore engines etc
It sounds like a hassle but for me, getting rid of this one and looking for another that I trust is also a hassle so.

Any info would be great, thanks!

I wouldn’t bother with a V6, better off with an EFI 5.0L. Talk to Marks 4WD and ask then what they have for conversion options.

Don't forget the costs of the wiring to suit, Engineering , motor and adaptor , exhaust labor to fit and in the end you still have a 1996 valued car .
I went through it a couple of years ago and decided to put that money into a new one.
Your choice in the end.

ARB back in the late 90s actually did make a V6 Hilux brand new.
I only did a quick search but this article mentions it briefly.

Or sell yours and buy this, will be cheaper in the end:
