Hilux brake upgrade - Land Cruiser Calibres???

Postby climbingmike on Tue, 23 Apr 2019 8:37 +0000

Hello All

I want to upgrade my front brakes and thought that there was a conversion you can do using Land Cruiser Calibres and Disk as they just bolt on. I thought this was a common conversion but I can't find much about in on the forum. Is this a thing and if so does any one have any info or forum topics on it that they can share with me?

Any advice is most welcome

Many thanks
MIke

PS My Hilux is a Mk6 but is a 2007???

Hey mate, look up the 120 prado conversion. Heaps here on that.
I might be wrong.

2005 SR Hilux 1KD - SOLD
2009 BMW X5 - destroyed by a hail storm
2012 Range Rover Sport SDV6 - SOLD
2015 Ford Ranger

You need:

120 series ‘cruiser (Prado) rotors and calipers, buy both new.
Used backing plates off the same vehicle.

Bolt straight on but you need 17” rims. Best bet are one of the following rims, all 17 x 7.5 30P:
120 'cruiser Grande rims used.
2011 dual cab diesel 4x4 Hilux.
2012-2015 4x4 SR5 Hilux.
Speedy Grande (new).

The largest 17" tyres you can legally fit to a 2007 are 265/65/17.

Simple matter of removing the original wheels, calipers and discs.
Undoing the retainer that holds the axle in the hub and popping the axle loose with a brass drift.
Undoing the 4 x bolts that hold the hub on, taking the hub off and changing out the backing plates.
Put back together and bleed the brakes.

The pedal feel is not perfect though, I upgraded my booster to a modified dual diaphragm one off a Commodore to improve it,

I have 17x9 rims, so should be fine. I have 305/65R17 tyres on my Hilux, is the maximum size you quoted the law in Australia? My truck is in South Africa so I dont think there is a law about that. The Hilux's you menstioned are 2011 & 12's do you know if this will work on my 2007 Mk6?

Many thanks

With 305/65/17 even the 120 series rotors will struggle, simply too much tyre diameter. In Australia you cannot increase your tyre diameter by more than 50mm as the brakes will not handle it, as you increase the tyre size you have to increase rotor diameter to get the same braking retardation.

2005-2015 are the same basic Hilux here, I didn’t mention 2011/12 other than for a source for wheels that fit the upgraded brakes.

Ok thanks for the info. I might look at a full after market kit with bigger disks then ;)

They probably won’t fit inside the 17” rims though. The 338mm or so 120 series rotors and calipers only just fit.

I have a new plan ;) It turns out I have the old size disk and calibres on my truck. The 297mm disks the new versions have the 319mm disks. So I can just buy the newer bigger calibres and a set of up rated disks and pads and I am done. They will just be a simple bolt on job :D

Yes the later ones are 319mm. The 120 series are 338mm. Both bolt on.
