decellerating noise / vibration

when I back off in 4th theres a grinding noise, its very loud going down a hill, must slip it into neutral to stop it, or change up to 5th.. Its also starting to do it in 3rd and 5th, but not nearly as bad. so its getting worse to the point where something must be done
sounds and feels like its coming from gearbox to me. the gear lever goes ballistic when it happens, have to keep my hand on it.
I asked one mechanic only, he said diff pinion gear. any ideas?
