Snorkel Install... Is This Right?

Postby Cobba7490 on Tue, 25 Jul 2017 6:14 +0000

Hey fellas,

So, i was checking my filters this morning and when i was checking my air filter I took a look at my snorkel and where it comes through the panel to the air box. It just didn't feel right.

I've searched the forum and couldn't find an answer that matched my engine (I could also be blind, haha).

My truck is a 1999 Ln167r dual cab with the 5L N/A engine.

Here's a video of the snorkel setup...

I thought it would come through the panel further back, closer to the air box and not as close to the headlights.

I'm probably being paranoid, but, I've had alot of issues the seller didn't warn me about with this truck and of late I've had a lot of trouble with my other cars as well.

Thanks for the help.

It all looks part and parcel. It might be standard setup to fit different motors maybe.
It looks like it is sealed to the airbox.

Thanks, mate. It all seems like it connects, i just don't have alot of experience with snorkels and how they fit.

The "inside hoose" in the motor bay seems to be the original one. The snorkel outside is well fitted. now you have to check wether inside the fender is another tube to connect the original airway to the snorkel. The air inlet is going like an "u" , in your rig.
If you plan river crossings you might want to seal the tube connections and check the underside of the air cleaner case if there is a kind of valve which releases water from the case. These valves have to be sealed in case of submerging. But if this valve is sealed the water (heavy rains) coming down the snorkel has no way to go.
I know some people who replaced the "automatic valve" with a crane from a garden watering hose so they can seal the inlet system in case of deep river crossings.

Thanks for the reply Tim. I had a quick look and can't find any kind of valve. Will have to have a better look.

2 things to look for also while you are mucking around when i had my 2000 model hilux i had the rubber joint between then filter box and plastic inlet snap around the bottom. The other thing some company's do when fitting those snorkels is fit a big washer in the inlet to make the snorkel quiet but also reduces air flow a fair bit

The setup is correct. The snorkel comes in, runs down the under side of the flare to just behind the indicator the pops into the engine bay. Be nice if the distance was shorter but I guess they wanted to use the existing pathway. I did mine so I know all the connections are sealed with sikaflex

Oh the valve should be under the air box. It's a little teat shaped grommet with a slit in it to allow drainage
