Had shoo roos on the bull bar of the cattle truck. Never had any panel damage from all the roos we hit...

Huh! you hit roos with shoo roos fitted? :o So they really work then?? they really protect your panels too??

yep, so long as you got lots of bar work, specially heavy duty, then even the worst shoo roos will protect yer car from panel damage....

hmmmm thought that would be the bars rather than the shoo-roos... but heck you are never too young to learn ;)

I went and looked at tires today, the back ones are getting a bit worn and with winter upon us I think it's time for a bit better traction. I basically have two options: Achilles Desert Hawk M/T or Maxxis Bravo 753
Looking at both of them in the shop the Achilles is wider and more aggressive but some people suggest they are slippery on road in the wet and that they wear quickly. What do you think? They want the same money for both so that's not an issue.

My 2c: I wouldn't put the Achilles on my car if they were free. BUT! Thats a personal choice. (ex sole trader, tyre business)
That said, Maxxis, before they were called Maxxis, were actually ChenShin. But I guess they have been around more than 15 years and seem to have proven themselves.

You haven't indicated what size you were looking at. If you were staying on the 14", I'm unaware of a Maxxis Bravo in 14 inch LT...
Anyways, I think the M/T's would get "old" very quickly on a 2WD. (as in: they would annoy ya)

At this stage I am staying with 14in, so the size is 195R14c. Are achilles cheap and nasty?
Well why I want m/t's is because it gets used a lot around the paddock, where highway tires don't really suffice.

Seems Maxxis do indeed carry a 195R14 M/T and the load index is good too. (106/104)

I did not check the Achilles...

Have you thought of getting a set of A/T instead of M/T?

A/T arent too bad in the mud and are way better on road... just my opinion though

I would ideally like A/T's but I don't think you can get them in the right size.

General make an A/T in 14" but looks like they are hard to find.. There is a chance that you may need to go to 15" rims to get what you are wanting...

I know this may not be what you are wanting to hear. But it sounds like you would be more suited to getting a 4x4 hilux instead of trying to mod a 2x4 hilux.

As you've said that money is not an issue I would sell the 4x2 and get myself a cheap 4x4. A 4x4 with road tyres would out perform a 4x2 with M/T tyres in any condition.

I wouldn't mind a 4x4 but at the moment I have a 2x4 for so that's the way it is.
I wish money wasn't a problem, I was referring to the fact that both tires i was looking at were the same price (i probably didn't explain clearly).

I think I might just put the achilles on it for now until I wear all four tires out then I might upgrade rims.

Thanks for your opinions.

I having been doing a bit of looking at LED light bars and HID spotties. Is there any legal limit on brightness? I know your not supposed to dazzle other drivers but is there any other stipulations? I was looking at VICoffroad lights and a lot of there lights say 'offroad', I asked them if this meant illegal on road and they said yes. I mean I drive kangaroo infested roads and rarely see another car, does it really matter? (about legalities).
What lights do you recommend? Have you had any problems with 'legalities'? General opinions?

Dont quote me but I'm pretty sure 55w hid is the limit, thats why you dont see names like ipf or narva go any bigger. Not sure about leds tho. I've had 100w hids b4 and for highway driving it's too much, you get slammed every time you go past a road sign! In my opinion there is no real advantage of goin that bright anyway as there isn't that much extra light down range to justify it. My 2c.

I wouldn't waste money on cheap tyres, you get what you pay for and sometimes much less. Put some better tires on such as Bridgestone AT's and you will be pleased with the outcome, especially if you go 15" rims and save your money on lights and other stuff. You can buy 2nd hand rims at any wrecker, I would go for landcruiser 15" at bout $10-15 per rim. They will give much better results in the long term. Look on ebay for 2nd hand 15" wheels and tyres and you will be surprised what you find. I found a whole set of 5 for $250 and that was the price for 1 new tyre.

I don't think landcruiser rims have the same bolt circle.
My front tires are still good so changing rims now is wasting them.

Ok your decision, but there are 15" wheels on ebay to fit yours.

Rims have to have the right center bore right? I found these but the center is 84mm and mine are 67mm.

that's ok so long as the bolt spacing is correct, the centre hole is not crucial but the pitch circle diameter (PCD) and number of holes is the essential data. Any tyre supplier will be able to tell you the pcd.

Those wheels are expensive but they are new, look for some 2nd hand ones and ask the vendor what they will fit.

See these for example:

PCD: 5x114.3 is probably the size you want

or these if you want stock steel: http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/4X-USED-GENU ... SwBw5XQoY8

Quick reference: but double check before any purchases...

Rims OE fitment on vehicle that have 5on114.3 and 67mm centrebore. No suggestion that offset is suitable. Just some info to aid your research...

centrebore is too small on the later lux's. (you have to bore them out from 61 to 67)
