V6 Petrol Vs Diesel

Looking at buying a V6 Hilux around the 2003-2004 range, was wondering what experience people have had in terms of fuel economy and how it runs with both Petrol and Diesel models. Is there a huge saving in having the diesel model ?

Cheers Oscar

I had a 2004 3.4 V6 xtra cab 4x4 and i would get 550Ks per tank it was around 12L/100Ks they are good and the money you save over a diesel its worth it!

Personally i'd sav ea few more $$ and get a post 2005 V6 (4.0 litre 1GRFE) ... which is one of toyota's finest motors. More torque AND power than the diesel (low down torque too, particularly if matched to A750 5spd auto) ... and they are bulletproof engines.

Throw an exhaust, some tuning and induction upgrades on them and they stomp even harder.

They are thirsty compared to the diesel, but in the scheme of things it's a non issue ... unless you tow a lot then they'll drink like a schoolie, then perhaps diesel is the better choice (albeit the 3.0 d4d has a tendency of suiciding over any bad fuel and other issues around the oil pickup that need close management).

Mate of mine has the 3.4 (2003) and the 4.0 is a different ballgame.

Careful, you'll upset the "soot gets the moot" and "real men drive diesels" knuckledragger brigades! (by no means do i dislike diesels btw, just the mongs that hold fuel type up there as a personality trait).

Diesel is great for towing and touring mileage.

Petrols more responsive and sounds much better.

Greatest thing about a diesel engine is you can fart in the car and tell the misses its just the diesel fuel.

I agree, buy a 2005+ V6 auto, there is still nothing better on the market $ wise for what it does unless you are towing huge kM then you'd want to look at a 'Cruiser or Patrol anyway. Mine tows fine and towing economy is not as bad as is made out by many who probably have never owned one (I'd be rich if I had a $ for how many people told me my car was bad on fuel and they've never owned or driven one). Face it, it is a near to 2tonne vehicle with a 4.0L engine and uses about the same amount of fuel on average as a V8 auto Holden ute, not that bad in the scheme of things! I'd never choose a V6 Holden ute over a V8 one unless I was doing massive kM where the bottom line mattered. Biggest pitfalls are soggy standard suspension and p!ssweak brakes for any 2005-2011, but both are relatively easily upgraded and if you buy right someone else would have done it for you.

on heavy beach work trips i found my mates with diesel hiluxes filling up around the same as me. On highway cruising different story, but long beach runs and such they were really labouring them and we're all drinking a LOT regardless (fuel AND grog!)

I worked it like this when i bought my 2007 V6 hilux 4x4
DIESEL will get 10L/100ks
V6 will get 13L/100k
So 3L every 100Ks extra is $3.50 x that by how many Ks you do a year and that is what it will cost extra a year to drive the petrol over the diesel
But if the injectors go on a diesel thats $2-3000 straight up!!
I had my fuel consumption down to 11.7L/100Ks but i was driving a lot of freeway and no load in the back i was averaging 12.9L/100Ks most weeks

I've got the 3.4 v6 dual cab sr5 and its a rocket. It has around 330000kms on it and still kicking. It's faster up the range than my mates 3.0 Patrol and keeps up with my brothers d4d hilux. Servicing is super simple and cheap. It's almost a Fraser island local and have even pulled a few cruisers out of the sand. I've recently explored the Glass house mountains and kept up with patrols and new rangers without a problem. The low range in the old girl is great and gets me almost anywhere. Unstoppable, cheap and fun ute. Put a long range tank in it or carry a few jerry cans if you're worried about kms to a tank.

11.7/100 klm all day long in my MY12 1GR-FE 4.0 V6 4x2 - never had an issue even towing my caravan - maintenance costs are very reasonable and never missed a beat...... hard to find a good one nowadays..
