2.8 Hilux with a turbo. Pros and cons ?

Postby Will_lux on Thu, 24 Mar 2016 7:03 +0000

Hi all I am looking at purchasing a 2.8 Hilux for my first car. I am aware that the old 2.8s are abit slugish. Was wondering what people think about putting turbos on them. Thanks will :)

I had a 5l which is the 3 litre naturally aspirated engine, and put a denco diesel turbo kit on it. I was happy with its performance, don't get me wrong, it was no rocket, but poked along well enough. It was all set up by denco originally and ran low boost, so I doubt longevity would have been an issue, had 140,000km of the turbo when I sold it, was still going strong.

You may find that the cost of adding a turbo to a N/A diesel (I'm guessing an older model) you may be able to pick up a cheap 05 Hilux (3.0 turbo diesel) for cheaper than the costs of the mods?

You would be correct a cheap 05+ would work out cheaper, as the kits start at 3k and go up, but it all depends on what model or if you require live axel or not
You could buy a ct20 and and plumb it on pass side between intake and filter and just keep factory header or extractors
You will get some lag but this mod can be done under 500
Or buy a setup from a 2l-Te (I think that's the surf engine model) and fit up for 700-1000 all second hand

I've got a 2.8 live axel on 33's factory diff 410 on clock
It's a ok no rocket, but reliable, don't expect to sit on 100kph when loaded for a trip (95 tops and up hills 60-70)
But on the work trip it's fine
I sold my 09 sr5 and brought a 90sr5 live axel
farting is alot like jxxxxxg off. both provide instant gratification, but neither is a long term solution to the actual problem......................

I think (for what it is worth) that it would be better buying a later mod turbo, with a few more miles on it, better in the long run. If serviced, miles don't really matter. I have found that it is usually better to pay the money up front than continually paying it over the years, even if you have to wait a while first, until you have the money.
