2004 sr5 turbo-diesel vs petrol

Postby Jack4WD on Sun, 24 Jan 2016 10:14 +0000

Hey guys,

I'm looking to get my first car which is going to be a Hilux. I was just wondering what is the differences between the petrol and turbo-diesel and is there a better option out of the 2?

Also are the 2004 Lux's as good as the post 2005 Lux's? Also what is the difference between pre and post 2005?

Hope you guys can help me out :)

Kind regards,
Jack :D

The choice of petrol or diesel will depend on what you intend to do with the vehicle once you get it. I had a 3 litre V6 4Runner and could not fault it and now have a 4 litre V6 Hilux which is brilliant for what I want it to do. If you are planning on doing water crossings then I would look closer at a diesel as the petrol has a spark ignition and can be susceptible to water ingress in the ignition system.

Pre or post 2005 again is a personal choice in my book. The 4Runner was a 94 model and my current hilux is a 2005 model. Both cars have their good and bad points and again will depend on what you plan to do with the vehicle. I have also owned an 86 Hilux diesel so there should not be any bias as I enjoyed driving that as well.

Probably doesn't help much but one of the biggest things to look at will be mileage and cost of purchasing the vehicle along with ongoing service costs. Any mods to the body and running gear should be the same for petrol or diesel. Good luck and enjoy whichever way you decide to go.

Thanks heaps mate, was a very insightful answer and just what I was looking for. I'm just planning to do some touring and maybe some harder stuff when I get a bit more experienced with 4 wheeling. Thanks for the reply

Sorry, I was trying to find the search bar but I couldn't find it. That sounds really dumb but I only just found it when I saw your message. I'll remember for next time. Thank you mate

In fairness to Jack, those posts all refer to Post 2005 Hiluxes, and he is looking for info on pre 05.

Hi Mate, difference being power and running costs. The little 2.7 puts out a fair bit of punch for its size too, so dont discount that, unless you want to tow. You should be able to find a tidy petrol already on lpg and save yourself a few bucks.

The Turbo diesel (1kzte) is a cracker of an engine, and a lot of people comment "last of the good ones".
They will be significantly better on fuel than the petrol, but still wont return single digit fuel consumption, like a commonrail diesel.

Either way you cant go wrong, this series is the last of the unbreakable hilux. Thats why I dont want to let go of mine!
