why not just use one of the 4wd accessory shops? Most have ready made kits off the shelf

Because an auto elec will generally do a better job? They're more knowledgable, can tailor make a kit to suit, rather than just a generic kit which may not be the best value for money, just my opinion, same reason I'd prefer piece together my own kit most of the time.

I had a friend who worked in one of those places once. He described himself as an installer. One day he was doing electrical work, the next putting on roof racks. Don't get me wrong, some of these guys are really talented and have a good knowledge on what they're doing but I'd rather give my money to a dedicated tradesman and can tailor make it to what I need.
