Postby 4wheelin on Sun, 09 Aug 2015 1:22 +0000

A mate of mine has just bought a 2.8 l hilux and has now found a crack in the head . what are our options as far as replacement heads will the early 3.0l head fit it for example or where they different? Any help would be appreciated.

I think the 2.8 is like a 3l engine designation isn't it? I am told you can whack a 5l head on which is the 3 litre naturally aspirated head, I am not sure whether it would make any difference, but the later 5l was EFI, so might be worth chasing an earlier head up off one of the old style fuel pump ones, I am sure someone will be able to give you a definitive answer soon mate!

Pretty sure 2L, 3L and 5L use the same head design the extra displacement is from increased stroke. You should be able to buy reco heads depending on how much your friend wants to spend. But also try and find why it cracked first, was it over heating? Or did it drop a pre combustion chamber?

Mate I'd ring a Toyota dealer and see if part numbers off other engines are the same as yours. You could also ring a couple of engine reconditioners and see if they're the same. Whether the head will bolt on or not is not the only problem. It is also the capacity of the combustion chamber in the head. A three litre engine would have a larger combustion chamber cast into the head than a 2.8 litre. It could also be a different shape to match different shaped pistons in the block and so on. Not simple. I'm afraid you need to do some homework here mate. It really isn't just a matter of a matching head stud layout. I have no idea if other heads will fit your block, but it's the way I would go about it. Cheers.
