Roadworthy/Legality issue

Postby bobski on Tue, 18 Oct 2011 2:23 +0000

G'day.
Ah not entirely sure if it should go in this forum but looked like the most appropriate. Anywho, I am looking at buying a Hilux from interstate (I live in Victoria and would be purchasing from NSW), however I am not entirely sure on a few things.

It is a 1999 KZN165R Dual Cab, with a custom tray. Not so much the issue, however it has a 6" lift.. Which is my main issue. Would that mean there would have to be an engineers certificate to pass the roadie? The 4x4 shift is down low and not in the center console where it should be, which would be another road worthy issue wouldn't it? It also comes with 35" bfgs. Would this again be something that makes it unable to attain a roadie?

The bloke selling it says that he is selling it with a roadie, however I am not entirely sure if he knows..

Next question being, if it does come with a road worthy, is that RWC useful in Victoria or would I need to get a Victorian registered mechanic to do another one? I know a handful of mechanics, some of me best mates are, so thats not the issue, would still be nice if it could just come with it though. Appreciate any help.

Cheers, Bob!

With 6" lift and 35" idd say no way without an engineers.
But then again it all depends on how the lift is made up to get 6"
If the shifter is down low idd say it has a big bodylift and the max is 2".

I got my '82' rm46 rwc with same mods(only had to remove 35" and fit STD 16" wheels) it's only the 35" you'll have issues with.
But once rwc the 35 were back on, also never got picked on with them either for the 10years I drove it like that until I sold it 2years ago
farting is alot like jxxxxxg off. both provide instant gratification, but neither is a long term solution to the actual problem......................

You doing the right thing asking questions. I was looking a surf with a solid front axle convertion and big lift had the cash about to go pick it up. When I phoned a friend whos our local suspension guru, he jumped on the net and had a look saying that it would most definately require an engineer certificate. When I asked the seller if he had one he said he didnt and had never had a problem. So asking for info saved me from a huge mistake especially as I was buying the car on behalf of a young mate who'd borrowed the money

Ah ok thanks for that.
The vicroads website doesnt seem to tell me all that much, kind of useless really.

Yeah I think I might just shy away from it. I was going to get a patrol, but I think the hilux is the most ideal as a daily driver, just need to modify it all the right way.

Yeah Kyle I imagine the relief haha, an old mate of mine bought a lowered car with airbag suspension, didn't have the engineers certificate and had to go through alot of shit and wasted a bit of money getting it organized. Always helps to double check first..

Ahh I'll link yas to the add, it doesnt look like anything too special, but rock sliders, few spotties and what not, be a good camping rig.

You cant have a body lift and suspension lift for a rwc in vic.... you can have one or the other but at a maximum lift of 2" is allowed. as for 35" tyres you will have to put the standard wheels back on it

oh really? thanks for that. I never really knew how high you could raise it. I guess that means there are plenty of unroadworthy cars out there
