I had put a active Pioneer subwoofer TS-WX110A in my 2002 Hilux Extra Cab. Installed it in middle of the rear bench and used a FJ Cruiser subwoofer button to switch it on and off.
Should work for the older Hilux, too. Currently I'm installing a Pioneer TS-WX120A in my 2014 Hilux Extra Cab again using a FJ Cruiser subwoofer switch. The switch fits nice in the lower center dash panel.
Will post photos.

I have a Pioneer TS-W121SPL in a custom enclosure (by me). My panels and interior are all rattling now, need to address that. Sounds pretty good but no good on the ol' ears for prolonged listening.

I have a 1999 Extra Cab which leaves plenty of room for putting the box.

I fitted a Pioneer active sub under the passenger seat in my old lux ('92).
